2. A Poetic mode of documentary is a creative and artistic type of
documentary. It forces no point of view on the audience and allows them
to make there own mind up on the scenario.
Poetic documentaries make the audience think , not into a certain frame
of mind but just to think.
Conventions of Poetic Documentaries are multiple tones and
rhythms, juxtapositions, unsolved situations, atmospheric music/sounds
and without narrative structure.
Examples of this documentary type include Baraka, Man of Aran and
Leni Riefenstahl's ‘Olympia’.
3. A Reflexive mode of documentary considers the quality of the documentary itself.
We are sometimes shown the camera people in this type of documentary which
shows how the documentary itself was created. It portrays ‘a’ truth not
necessarily ‘the’ truth.
Conventions of this type of documentary include re-enactments, expressive
lighting, dramatic music and a voiceover.
Examples of this type of documentary include Man with a Movie Camera and
Mitchell Block’s ’No Lies’.
4. The performative mode engages the filmmaker to the story but constructs
subjective truths that are significant to the filmmaker him or herself.
Conventions of this documentary type include subject interactions with the
documentary maker and crew, emphasising social and emotional impact, subject
matter usually concerns the audience directly, the documentary maker comments
on the making of the documentary and the documentary often ends without a
affirmative answer.
Examples of this type of documentary include Supersize Me and Tongues Untied.
5. This mode is what we identify of most documentaries, it is one sided and
comes across argumentative. The audience is spoken to directly and the
voiceover is what does this.
Conventions of this type of documentary are that it has a ‘Voice of God’
commentary or a ‘Voice of Authority’ , images are often used to illustrate
the view of the voice.
Examples of Expository Documentaries include the work of David
Attenborough in his nature documentaries.
6. This mode of documentary attempts to capture objective reality with
filmmaker as a neutral observer. Observational Documentaries tend to
simply observe, allowing viewers to reach whatever conclusions they
may deduce.
Conventions of this documentary type include no voiceovers, no
interviews, the maker of the documentary is hidden and subjects
pretend not knowing that they are being filmed.
Examples of this documentary type include Frederick Wiseman
‘Hospital’, and Richard Pennebacker's ‘Don't Look Back’.
