8. The Opportunity: Using AI in BD Healthcare
• Technology, and specifically the applica,on of Ar,ficial Intelligence (AI) can play an important role in
achieving health goals, bridging the gap between resource limita, ons and allowing con, nued
improvement in healthcare delivery.
• We see the poten,al for adap,ng and leveraging the rapid improvements in cogni,ve compu,ng and
AI to help deliver higher quality and more cost effec,ve health services in less developed countries
such as Bangladesh.
• In the case of Bangladesh, the number of trained medical personnel is too low for adequate coverage
of the whole popula,on. There are only around 3.6 physicians and 1 nurse per 10,000 individuals.
• This is aggravated by the geographical misdistribu,on of the staff, with only 16% of the doctors
opera,ng in rural facili,es.

WHO 2005 Genomics Report:
" The major argument of the Genomics and World
Health Report is that gene3cs, and even
genomics, should not be considered luxuries beyond the
reach of developing countries. Rather they are tools
that present opportuni3es for addressing the specific
needs of the poor, either through technology
transfer or through the development of endogenous
capacity. For example, besides the value of gene3c
tests in providing services of immediate public
health benefit, the report claims that gene3cs has a
second advantage: it lays a founda3on for the
development of skills and exper3se in DNA-based
techniques like genomics, opening the door to a
powerful research pla]orm with poten3ally wide
applicability in the health sphere and beyond. “

Gene3c Tes3ng
What is Pharmacogene8cs?
§ Technology that analyzes how gene,c makeup affects an individual’s response to
medica,on.
Why should you be tested?
§ Pharmacogene,c tes,ng is the cornerstone of personalized medicine. Determining
how well you metabolize medica,on raises chances of a posi,ve outcome and reduces
possible adverse drug related reac,ons.
How does it work?
§ Personalized Medicine starts with a buccal swab, rubbed on the inside of your cheek
to collect cells.
§ Your doctor will then get a detailed report that will help them make the most
informed decisions possible when prescribing your medica, ons.
