Infrared transmission of the cornea<br />Data on infrared (IR) absorption spectra through the ocular media has received great interest stemming from research into effects of radiation on the eye as well as in techniques to obtain physiological information on biological tissues. [Boettner]<br />The study by Boettner and Wolter (1962) studied the spectral transmittance of UV, visible and near IR light through ocular media of 9 human eyes. They found that 300nm in the ultraviolet to 2500nm in the infrared is transmitted through the cornea as outlined in Figure 1. There is a rapid increase from 300nm with approximately 80% transmittance reached at 380nm. Transmittance increases to over 90% from 500 to 1300nm. Beyond this, there are two absorption bands of water which peak at 1430 and 1950nm. The cornea is the only structure to have its maximum so far in the infrared. (1996) whose study showed that the infrared transmittance of human ocular media could be compared to that of the absorption spectrum for pure water. van den Berg et al. suggested that any possible increase obtained from the equivalent water layer in comparison to the true water layer maybe be due to non-water substances in the ocular media. and thus published Aabsorption coefficients for pure water were thus published to allow for conversion between absorption spectrum of pure water to that of the human ocular media.
