● Between 10,000 and 8,000 BC fitness began as early as the
first humans to walk this earth
● Cavemen performed every day task like walking ,gathering
cattle and hunting for food which was a huge amount of
physical demand of the body
● This everyday routine would soon change the average man's
body into a more defined and muscular toned shape
3. Greek and Roman Empires
● Between 4,000 and the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD Greek and Roman
empires focused on a military base of physical training as well as performing
everyday task like the cavemen but instead had a specific event they were
training for such as military
● Introduced to different environments such as terrains and hills which
challenged the body
● Individuals were to throw,aim and tackle things to fight and battle against
● Introduced to Olympics and a huge influence of sports which demanded
training as well
4. ● Following the fall of Greek empires gyms and recreational spaces
slowly died down .
● It wasn't till the 1800’s where gyms and health clubs like the YMCA
(1884) popularized again but it was irregular for women to workout
● Gyms were gymnastic base
● In the 19th century schools began to emphasise physical activity and
staying fit by creating p.e classes in a gymnasium
● Georges Hebert and Professor Edmond Desbonnet influenced the
philosophy of the “Natural Method” to inspire people to be involved
in physical education by learning the fundamentals of the body by
developing good movement

5. Influence of Jack Lalanne
● In 1936 Jack Lalanne opened up the
very first health club to have a healthy
snack bar as well
● Promoted healthy nutrition and diet
● His goal was the reshape a person's
body and lifestyle

that demonstrated exercising(1951) and
(1959)internationally for 34 years to be

6. Early life of a fitness Godfather
● Born on September 26 , 1914 in San Francisco,California as a child Jack
overate by stuffing his face with sugary foods and junk food
● It was then his mother and he attended a nutrition lecture and was then
inspired to change his lifestyle
● He was only 15 when he started lifting weights where he then became a top
athlete for his wrestling and football team
● He would soon become the Godfather of Modern fitness

superhuman strength and athletic

1954 Age 40: Swam the length of the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge
underwater with 140 pounds of equipment, including two air tanks… an
undisputed world record.
1955 Age 41: Swam, handcuffed, from Alcatraz to Fisherman’s Wharf in
1959 Age 45: Completed 1,000 pushups and 1,000 chin-ups
in 1 hours and 22 minutes.
1984 Age 70: Handcuffed, shackled and fighting strong winds and currents,
towed 70 boats with 70 people from the Queen’s Way Bridge in the Long
Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary, 1 ½ miles.

and Fitness Award
1996 Age 82: Dwight D. Eisenhower
Fitness Award
2009 Age 95: Jack receives Lifetime Achievement Award
from Club Industry. Jack LaLanne days were observed in
San Francisco and Los Angeles.
10. Legacy
Jack Lalanne passed away at the age
of 96 his courageous stunts and
strength however lasted him even in
his older years.He was healthier than
ever and was still lifting each day as
well as swimming.
It wasn't till later on his career he was
praised for his fitness habits and
promoting good lifestyles .Most
thought he was crazy and had no idea
what he was talking about.
