Part A- Rogers Sportsnet Company Research
1. Company Information
Was established in 1998 as CTV Sportsnet
Is Privately owned by Rogers Media
Is a franchised operation owned by Rogers
In 2017, they signed a deal with CBC for a 7-year extension of Hockey night in Canada
Partnership with the NHL and delivers the most NHL games around Canada
Is available in 8.2 million of Canadian homes
In 2010, Rogers began to expand the Sportsnet beyond the regional networks
Sportsnet mission statement is:Connecting Canadian sports fans to their favourite
teams and athletes, using four platforms: TV, Radio, Online and Mobile
There are 3 different Sportsnet locations located in Vancouver, BC, Calgary, Alberta and
Toronto, Ontario
I couldn’t find how many employees they employ around their whole corporation
Some examples of their tv programs include: Tim and Sid, Sportsnet Central, Plays of the
month: Highlights and, Misplays of the month
2. Products or Services
Sportsnet provides service for over 8 million people across Canada
They deliver radio and TV sources that allow you to watch your favourite sport teams
across Canada
Some of the sports that you can watch include: NBA, NHL, MLB and Darts
They show different Canadian teams from these sports like the Toronto Maple Leafs,
Toronto Raptors, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers
They are providing more games and teams from around the league so that they can
bring in the biggest audience possible
They provide more games than their competition to make sure that the viewers turn to
them first before any one of their competitors
Sportsnet takes new approaches to hockey having the best analysists around to talk
about the game and to put their viewpoints in perspective
3. Competitive Profile
Competitors include: TSN, NBC, CBC
TSN focuses on both NBA and NHL
Sportsnet mainly focuses on NHL
NBC is an American channel that has different sports like collage basketball but also has
hockey and basketball
I think Sportsnet beats their competition when it comes to the amount of MLB games
and NHL games they produce
4. 4
Their weakness is that over the years many customers have committed to TSN because
they have more channels and provide more of a variety
Another strength that Rogers Sportsnet has is they provide in depth analysis to games
that other tv programs might not have coverage on
Another weakness Rogers Sportsnet has is they cover some sports like tennis which may
not always bring in a lot of viewers
4. Company Culture
Rogers Chief Executive Officer is Joe Natale
Interim president is Phil Hartling
Presidents are Dean Provost and Rick Brace to name a few top management
The organizational structure I think is a Matrix structure because their jobs are grouped
by function
The different functions under Rogers include they’re behind the scenes so positions like
camera man, sound operator, editor and production manager
Other positions include people who appear on camera so the reporters and different
analysists would be another group
Rogers is looking for employees with good working habits and effective communication
and broadcasting skills
The requirements for the job will depend on the specific position
They have volunteer programs that allow you to work with them and allow them to help
develop your skills
They accept intern positions to help your skills and maybe offer you a position after your
internship
They would give promotions and give big job opportunities as their incentives to work
hard
5. Introspective Analysis
I learned that they give out volunteer experiences that can help you someday get a job
and its also good for a resume
This would help in the future when further job opportunities come down the road
I learned that they give out internships that could help get my name out there in their
organization
This would help me get more job opportunities from different employers
Being in the middle of Toronto is a good place to work having different ways to get to
work without driving
This helps me because I don’t need to drive in busy Toronto, instead I can take the
subway or take a bus to work
I can see myself working for this company as a sports broadcaster
I want this because since I was little I would always watch Leafs games and do their play
by play in my living room
5. 5
I think to be successful in sports broadcasting you have to be able to work well in a team
I had 5 for working well in a team because I work well with others and can get work
done much more efficiently in a group
I’m very good at making others see eye to eye with me by persuading them to look at
things in a new way
This would help when establishing a view on an event that had happened in the game
that I was commenting on
For example, an illegal check in hockey
I am good at expressing myself through talking
This is helpful when I’m broadcasting because I can give radio listeners a visualization of
what is going on in the game
