When a verb ends in the suffix ‘ed’ it is often written in past
tense - E.G: walked, jumped, talked, planted
When a verb is written in present tense it is often written in
its root form with or with the suffix ‘ing’ – E.G:
walk/walking, jump/jumping, talk/talking, plant/planting
Sometimes verbs written in the past tense will not have
suffixes on the end of their root form and you will just have
to remember these - E.G: rode=ride, taught=teach,
swam=swim, wrote=write, ran=run, threw=throw

Adding ‘ing’ to a root word can change a noun into a verb
e.g 'garden' to 'gardening’
Adding ‘ing’ to the end of a work can also change the
tense of word

There are 3 main rules for adding the suffix ‘ing’
these are:
1. If the root word ends in two consonants you can
just add ‘ing’ to the end of the word. E.G: miss =
missing
2. If there is only one consonant after the vowel at
the end of the word, you will have to double the
last consonant. E.G: hit = hitting
3. If the word ends in a split digraph you will need to
omit the e when adding ing to the end of the word.
E.G: write=writing
