Boosting Infrastructure is Integral
The Captains of Construction Leadership Forum provides an exclusive platform where the most prevalent issues
hindering infrastructure development can be explored. Moreover, it will highlight the opportunities that exist for
further development through the collaboration of public
and private stakeholders.
• Based on value, Southern Africa boasts the three largest infrastructure development projects under construction
on the continent
• Through infrastructure development, Southern Africa can maintain its position of economic leadership
• South Africa is spending USD300 billion on its Infrastructure Development Programme which will have far
reaching positive economic effects in the region
• Opportunities abound: Southern Africa has a broad sector spread in terms of construction activity including:
o Energy and power (31%)
o Mining (19%)
o Transport (18%)
o Commercial Real Estate (17%)
• Public sector participation in Southern Africa is significant. Of the 123 large infrastructure projects, 53% are
publicly owned
• However funding is more evenly shared, with Private Domestic institutions funding 20% of projects, Africa DFIs
funding 16% and Europe/ US funding 12%
• Governments are funding 7% of infrastructure development projects
• The future of infrastructure development in the region lies in the collaboration between public and private sector
The Captains of Construction Forum
The Captains of Construction leadership forum will seek to address the following
infrastructure development issues through vigorous interaction during two
moderated panel discussions focusing on Driving Africa’s Industrialisation through
Regional Infrastructure Development.
• What role does the private sector have to play in the development of large-
scale infrastructure projects in Africa?
• What are the opportunities and benefits for industrialisation around key
infrastructure projects?
• What are the key challenges inhibiting private sector participation in
infrastructure projects in Africa?
• Can a framework be established to grow investment in regional infrastructure
projects in Africa?
