1. MAC 211 Michael Uslan speech
When you have a dream, do your best to try to fulfill it. Regardless of what other people
say, you can do anything if you set your mind to it. Michael Uslan had his dreams and ideas
criticized, laughed at and questioned but he refused to give up. Superheroes and comics were
an escape for Uslan throughout his life. When he graduated from high school, Uslan had over
30,000 comics. He even learned to read from comic books. When Uslan went to college in
Indiana, he was eventually able to teach the first comic book course which caused a lot of
attention in the media. He convinced the Dean to allow him to teach the course after he asked
the Dean to recite the stories of Moses and Superman. This proved to the Dean that a lot of
comics are based off legends and even religious stories.
Batman was always Uslan’s favorite superhero because Batman had no super powers
and was very human. After watching the premiere of the Batman TV show in 1966, Uslan had a
dream of changing the national perception of Batman from a joke to a serious character. When
Uslan was in his 20s, he bought the rights to Batman after nobody wanted them. Uslan’s movie
concept with a serious Batman was rejected by every studio in Hollywood. It would take 10
years for Uslan’s Batman movie to be made but it was a huge success and has since spawned a
successful franchise.
