Comprehensive map of human
potentials and reality
• From Ancient shamans to today’s
cognitive science
• Distills all the known systems and
models of human growth into 5
Elements
– Quadrants, Levels, States, Lines, Types
• “ There is no one so intelligent to be 100% wrong”
Integral Theorists
• Shri Aurobindo first to use the term in 1914
• Jen Gebser 1939
• Goethe, Schelling, Hegel, Gustav Fechner,
William James, Rudolf Steiner, Aleister Crowley,
Alfred North Whitehead, James Mark Baldwin,
Jurgen Habermas, and Abraham Maslow .
• Michael Murphy – Esalen Institute
• Ken Wilber arguably the main force behind
Integral Theory
KOSMOS
Wilber calls ALL the Kosmos
AQUAL
– Quadrants, Levels, Lines, States and Types
• A map to better navigate Life
• Facilitate
– Growth
– Development
• Is a map not the territory
They are essential aspects of
our own awareness – NOW
Stages
Not judgment, just the reality
Stages
• Stage conceptions are multiple
– Chakras – 7 main (Earth, sex, emotion, heart, throat,
3rd eye, light)
– Gebser – 5 main (archaic, magic, mythic, rational,
Integral)
– Western models of 8 or 12
– Spiral Dynamics
– Wilber altitude model
Stages
• Matter
– Particles
– Atoms
– Molecules
– Cells
– Organisms
– Bodies
– Ecosystem
– Galaxies
• Artifacts
– Bricks
– Walls
– Floor
– Building
– Neighborhood
– County
– City
– Nation
– Human habitat
“levels of development”
Stages
• “The greater the consciousness the greater the
organism housing it”
– Reptilian Brain stem
– Mammalian limbic system
– Triune brain – Neocortex
– Etheric Brain (Hawkins) (Long time meditators have a
more developed connections between the two
hemispheres) Graphic page 114 discovery of the
presence of God.
Common error:
To look for a definitive “model” to explain growth. On the contrary the
idea of stages applies to every aspect of reality as perceived in time.
Stages
• Waves of development to emphasize
– Fluidity
– Flow
• Moral development
– Egocentric -- Body
– Ethnocentric – Mind
– Worldcentric – Spirit
• “Progressive and permanent milestones along
the evolutionary path of your own unfolding”
Stages
• Permanent
• Structures
• Multiple ways of “slice and
dice” development
– In the UL and LL are fluid
– In the UR are more rigid
– In the LR again are fluid
• We call that altitude or
Vertical Development
Predator Prey
Sinner Saint
Winner Loser
Insensitive Sensitive
Higher Stages are invisible to lower
Thus, the idea that, for example, turquoise is supposed to enter a 'dialogue' with green is
nonsensical, and nothing in that dialogue will change green's mind fundamentally (unless
green transforms to turquoise). Turquoise can see green and its facts, but green cannot
see turquoise and its facts, and thus this cross-level altitude problem jams any real
dialogue in that capacity‘ and yet all that green does is scream for dialogue, dialogue,
dialogue'. which in these cases are empty, empty, empty.
I am truly sorry, but that is the developmentalist's answer to the cry for dialogue in these
cross-level cases (again, something can always be learned by both sides, but that is not
the issue here). And green always takes turquoise's failure to make green happy as proof
that green is right and turquoise is a bastard.
By the way, the fact that phenomena are level-bound or altitude-bound (and are brought
forth or enacted by particular exemplars or paradigms) will also AFFECT WHAT A
RESEARCHER IN THE FIELD WILL ACTUALLY SEE OR REGISTER WHEN DOING
RESEARCH. For example, when empirically studying human beings undergoing
development, if the researcher is at first tier, he or she will not see or register second-tier
phenomena in the developmental research. 'Empirical facts,' as we have seen, actually
change and emerge at different levels.
States
Available to everyone
States
• Major
State Body Mode of experience or
energetic feeling
Waking Gross Body  gross senses
Dreaming Subtle Body  Imagination
Deep Sleep Casual Body  Formless Awareness
Turiya Witness Body  I AMness, Isness
Turiya Tita  Unmanifest One without second
Major Meditative States
States
• Induced
– Meditative (Yoga, contemplation, meditation…)
– Altered (Drugs, Hypnosis, etc.)
– Peak (making love, playing games, hiking,
isolation…)
• They pass, they come and go. – They are
temporary
Stages & States
How they fit together?
Clarifications
• States also evolved in Stages, but we call
that horizontal development
• But is possible to be at tial altitude and not
have the state awareness of God Head.
• Or to be at stage development of Non-
Dual and be at red altitude
Major Meditative States
Altitude and Horizontal Development
Wilber Combs Lattice
Lines
Multiple
Intelligences, Abilities, Paths
Lines of Development
• Psychograph
– Aesthetic
– Cognitive
– Emotional
– Shadow
– Interpersonal
– Kinesthetic
– Moral
– Musical
– Psycho-sexual
– Spiritual
– Ethics
– Ego Development
– Relationships
Lines of Development
• Center of gravity
– Personal
– Cultural
• Lines evolve in stages also, but we need not to
confuse “Stages of Development, i.e. altitude or
structures with the stage of development of a
particular line”
Lines of Development
• Paradox:
– Highly evolved cognitive and verbal altitude, but lower moral
development – Hitler
– Highly evolved spiritual but lower psychosexual and cognitive
line – Pedophilia Catholic priests
– Highly evolved cognitive, moral but lower spiritual line – Atheist –
Scientist
– Highly evolved kinesthetic line, medium cognitive, lower moral –
Sports figure gambling or wife beating
The understanding that most of us are unevenly develop prevents
us from thinking that greatness in one area equals greatness.
Integrally develop means you know your “real move up…
Types
Types
• Can be present at any stage of development
• Horizontal typologies
– Myers-Briggs
• Feeling  Thinking  Sensing  Intuiting
– Enneagram
• 9 types  3 main tendencies
Feminine
Relationship, Care, Responsibility …
Communion: (a focus on other people and
relationships)
Masculine
Autonomy, Justice, Rights …
Agency: (a focus on the self and the formation of
separations)
Yin Yang
Right brain Left Brain
Types
• Types can manifest in a healthy or unhealthy way
– Masculine: Autonomy, strength, independence, freedom 
Alienation, domination, Fear of relationship and commitment,
Chaos, all is ok.
– Feminine: Flowing, relationships, care, compassion  Panic, co-
dependence, Compulsive giving, fusion, dominated by others.
• Understanding typologies tend to help us understand
and communicate with others
• Seeing or pointing at unhealthy typologies is not
judgment but a way to understand and help others – and
our selves.
• Types tend to despaired as you grow in altitude and
become more integral

the AQAL Model?
The 4 Quadrants
Practice
How people grow using
the AQAL Model?
Practice
• The practice of states tends to move you
faster through stages.
• “The practice of states act as a lubricant
on the spiral of development”
• ILP is the first approach to an integrated,
comprehensive, efficient and rewarding
way to live life to its maximum potential
including as much perspectives and
elements as possible.
We walk the road
There is a road in front of us
We are the road
