1. Close Up of Antagonist in low
key lighting. This close up is
usually a very quick shot to
give a glimpse of the ‘baddy’
who causes the disequilibrium.
Reaction / Mid Shot. This shot
shows the victim when the
realise the disequilibrium and
what is happening in there
surroundings.
Long Establishing Shot. This
shot is commonly used as it
gives an idea of the
surroundings and setting the
film is set in also showing the
victims disadvantage.
Over Shoulder Shot. This enables
the audience to see what the
characters see. Commonly the
victim before or during the
disequilibrium to add to the
understanding of the plot.
2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Developing form and conventions
SOUND – In our trailer we chose sounds and a backing
track that reflected the storyline and added tension
however we did not use much dialog to keep the story
vague making the audience want to see the film.
PLOT – We chose to keep out plot of the storyline
conventional to the horror genre to help reaching out
to out target audience. We did this by adding a
innocent character who becomes the victim followed
by a antagonist who causes the disequilibrium. This
creates disharmony and basically ruins the victims life.
LIGHTING – The lighting used I nearly all horror films
and trailers is low key lighting especially after the
disequilibrium takes place. This helps to mask the
identity of the Antagonist causing harm adding to
anonymity which we incorporated into our trailer
emphasised by the use of the hood on his coat.
SHOTS – We attempted to keep our length of shots
conventional. To ensure we did this we watched a
selection of horror genre trailers and kept a tally of
how many shots there were and how many seconds
that shot was on screen. We found that most shots
only lasted a very few seconds giving us an idea of how
long to show ours for. This helped us to master this
convention.
CLIFFHANGER – To remain conventional we decided on
leaving the trailers ending to the viewers imagination
as we did not show the fate of our victim.
Challenging forms and conventions
SETTING – In our trailer we chose to have the setting in
a everyday location to make the story believable.
However we discovered in most horror films the
disequilibrium occurs in a isolated location away from
help. We moved away from this and had it based in
more believable location which we think worked well.
STORY – We decided to only feature two main
characters in the production of our trailer with the
victim and the antagonist being the only characters
seen. We found this was uncommon in horror films as
usually the victims are a group of teens who are
unaware of there danger in the isolated location
however we chose to have a victim who has nobody
else around for support.
