Developing Specific Types
of Materials
Lesson 1
Materials for the Teaching
of Vocabulary
•Vocabulary is key to English
Language learning for without it, it would
be difficult for anyone to convey ideas or
understand other people. it glues
everything else together from your ideas
to the meaning it holds to one’s
understanding of these ideas.
•Mastering the vocabulary of
a target language also
facilitates the acquisition of
all skills like listening,
reading and writing.
• we can conclude then that vocabulary
refers to all the words in a certain
language that people use to
communicate. It is to be noted as well
that vocabulary acqusition does not
only refer to knowing the meaning of
words but also to undersatnding its
orthography, pronunciation, context
and conjugation.
•Vocabulary is dynamic.
• in April 2020, MerriamWebster added 535
new words. Most of these words are
related to the COVID 19 pandemic
situation.
• Oxford English dictionary also listed more
than 400 new words in 2020.
•One’s vocabulary
mastery is a building
block to language
profeciency.
