Kevin Young's Poetry - Some Definitions
1. THE KEVIN YOUNG’S POETRY - DEFINITIONS
Firstly, I have realized the similarities between
Young and the late graffiti artist Jean-Michel
Basquiat and his influence on African American
culture. Young tackles race and society’s
expectations. In “Negative”, Young makes the
reader “Wake to find everything black. Immediately
we are asked to consider what we find backward
about these opening lines. Is everything in this
description the vice versa that the author expects it
to be, or are we somehow above the stereotype?
Young is at his starkest while revealing the
memories of his childhood. However, his recount
has a sense of calm that seems directly inspired by
his poetry which is “emotion recollected through
tranquility”.
In this poem, by Kevin Young, we notice many
things:
There are a lot of verbs, a lot of action, to keep the
interest; a place is established, with someone
traveling through that place.
2. In both poems there’s this relation about a familiar
place, maybe a place to live his intense life.
One more interesting thing is the punctuation that
leads the reader to create and to participate in this
poem scene.
And I guess that everyone in this blog realized
Young’s imperative mood and also describing his
places in real landscapes!
“Nothing but the wheat, waving them
Sick, a sea. While they strangle
Him blue as the sky above you…”
THESE ARE THE LITTLE PASSAGES IN BOTH POEMS AND RELATED
TO THE AUTHOR’S DESCRIPTION.
