Active Reading And
How You Can Do It

Perhaps thereâs no single correct
way to read books, but how
beautiful it is to be able to savor
every word on the page and fully
experience the entire world that
those words create. Here comes
active reading, which reads
everything with eyes as well as an
ear for what makes the written
work fly. Letâs have a quick look at
how it can be done.

For starters, thereâs passive and
active reading: the former

entertainment, perhaps going
through it without much attention
to detail. The latter, however,
involves a good focus on the
authorâs craft and develops
evaluation skills that can be
applied to the literary work.
There are different ways to do
active reading. One is selecting a
narrative element and examining
how a story uses it. An active
reader, for instance, may study
how established authors create
their chapter endings.
Another area of focus is dialogue, a
good point of analysis. Active
reading can answer a number of
questions: what are Character Aâs
speech mannerisms? What are the
unique verbal patterns in this
novel? How is the dialogue
integrated into the scene â is it a
transcript, or does it go hand in
hand with actions?
Another powerful way to practice
active reading is radically simple:
talk about the work. Discuss with a
friend your thoughts, feelings, and
actions about the book. Join a book
club or reading class, or dig deeper
into the readersâ guide, if itâs
included in the book or publisherâs
website.
Active reading is all about slowing
down, taking time to understand
why and how certain works affect
us this way, and what exactly is
going on in the fictional or non-
fictional work. It combines the
pleasure of reading with its
conscious study and learning.
