MAIN CARIBBEAN
PIPELINE
2. PROJECT PURPOSE
• Construct a 3800 km long gas-pipeline from
Florida US to East Venezuela via the mainland
of the major Caribbean Islands
• Change all Caribbean Islands energy supplies
to environmental friendly gas
• Give poor Caribbean countries bordering US
an energy and industrial boost
4. PROJECT HISTORY
• First introduction of the project was done by Johan Eck-Olsen to PDVSA in
1996, but low interest was shown for the project due to the bad US/Cuba
relations at the time
• The idea was re-launched by Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad and
Tobago, who announced in 2002 that his country was going to undertake
one of the largest civil engineering projects in the Caribbean region. The
project suffered a brief setback when Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez
stated that the pipeline should instead originate from Venezuela and reach
further into the north, including Cuba and the US
• Trinidad Tobago has independently of the 2002 setback decided and have
engineered a plan for a gas pipeline from Trinidad Tobago to Barbados. The
plans is carried out by Eastern Caribbean Gas Pipeline Company (ECGPC).
The pipeline is 300 km long, and planned to start construction 2016
9. NORWEGIAN EXPERIENCE FROM POLARLED
PIPELINE PROJECT
• Statoil has set a world water depth pipe laying record by tapping
into the rich resources in the Norwegian continental shelf and
transporting the gas via a 480 km long 36” subsea gas pipeline to
the shore of Norway
• The total cost of the 480 km long Polarled pipeline was 1 Bill USD
• The Polarled required specialised route designs, including the use
of turn points allowing the route to follow the overall contours of
the strait
• As part of the Polarled geotechnical design, earthquake analyses
were performed for 100 year and 10000 year earthquakes to assess
the settlements
13. WORLD BANK CLIMATE INVOLVEMENT
• Before the year 2020 the World bank has decided
that 28 % of all investments should be related to
climate settlement projects
• The World Bank will has already allocated 10,3 Bill
USD per year for climate settlement purposes
• The VP Jim Yong Kim in the World Bank has a goal
of introducing 28 Bill USD per year for the climate
settlement projects
14. SUMMARY
• United Nations / World Bank needs to be leading
• Involves multiple governments interaction
• Estimated total cost 8 Bill USD
• Will give 38 million people a stable electrical supply
• Give a new change for industry boost in the
Caribbean region
• Green Industry project if introduced correctly
