2. Long hair isn’t just a style preference — it’s a physical cue of good health to others as
well, one study suggests.
Researchers from the University of South Brittany looked at the effect of women’s
hairstyles on the behavior of people. The study observed the reactions of male and female
passersby as they see a female-confederate with three different hairstyles (two short, one
long) drop a glove.
While women’s responses stayed consistent regardless of the style or hair length, the
results reveal that men were more inclined to pick up the glove for women with long hair.
This suggests that long-haired women were perceived to be young and healthy, making
the male passersby more ready to interact with them.
3. The Correlation of Good Health and Long Hair
The Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology by David M. Buss establishes the link between
good health and long hair. One of his passages reveals that nutrition deficiencies could lead
to the production of ugly, broken, and damaged hair. Hair, therefore, gives an observable
record of a person’s nutrition and health. It also serves as an indicator of general health
and diet over a 2- to 3-year period.
Exercising Hair Care
Following the association between good health and long hair, men and women who want
healthy-looking hair should also take on a healthy diet. An article by Style Craze says that
a balanced diet rich in proteins can ensure hair and scalp health. Individuals who want to
prevent hair loss should consume protein-rich food, such as red meat, eggs, oysters, and
salmon. The article also added that to stimulate hair growth a person should eat nutrient-
rich food, such as asparagus, flax seeds, dry nuts and fruits, and green vegetables.
