Globe Theatre
Built 1599
The Globe Theatre does not have a known architect. The theater was built by the
owners of the Lords Chamberlains Men, for which Shakespeare owned 12.5%. The
building was a reconstruction of another theater named The Theatre. Once the land
lease had expired, the building was deconstructed and the timbers were used to create
the new Globe Theatre in 1599. This group was responsible for dismantling The
Theatre over night while the land owners were out of town. The lease expired on the
land and when the property owners were not willing to renew the lease the group
made the decision to move the theater and make it their own. The pieces of the
structure were floated across the river Thames and reconstructed on the bank.

The Globe Theatre, was built as a play house on the banks of the River
Thames in 1599. The playhouse was used as the stage for many of William
Shakespeare’s works. The theater would hold 3,000 people, Groundlings
(peasants who could not afford to sit in the stands), would stand in the
yard without protection from the elements. In 1613 the theater burned to
the ground during a performance of Henry VIII. One of the cannons used
in the play misfired catching the thatched roof on fire. The theater was
rebuilt in 1614, but was closed by the puritans in 1642 then torn down to
make space for tenement housing in 1644. A replica was constructed near
the site of the original theater in 1989.
