Introduction Our guitar tutorial for the song “My Stupid Mouth” by John Mayer was
created to be a better type of tutorial. We designed it to combine the
best and most helpful parts of several guitar tutorials to make a more
effective type of YouTube guitar lesson.

Usability Test
Objectives
We used the usability test outlined below to assess the effectiveness of
the video and to see if we are able to teach this song to actual
intermediate guitar players.

We designed the project for
intermediate (or moderate) guitar
players, so we wanted to make sure
that we are surveying in our intended
demographic. The recommended
number of participants is 5, however
we ended up with three participants
due to time constraints and
availability.

Usability Test
Methods For the remote test, we sent two
surveys and the link to the video to
the participants via email and then
analyzed their responses.
We asked each participant to fill out
the pre-survey.
They were then given the scenario.
Imagine that you are wanting to learn
“My Stupid Mouth” by John Mayer. You
do a YouTube search and come across
this video.
a) Play the video
b) Watch the video and follow the
instructions
c) Feel free to rewind and replay the video
as many times as necessary.
Finally, they were asked to complete
the post-survey and then send the
surveys back to our team via email.

Results and Findings
100% of participants said that they
felt that there were no major issues
with the background or with the
captioning of the video.
33% said that they were too slow,
33% said that they were too fast
towards the end and 33% said that
they were slower than other tutorials
he’s seen, but that it was helpful.
100% of participants said that the
audio was clear and easy to
understand.
66% of participants said that they
would recommend this video to a
friend.
100% of participants said that they
have used YouTube to help them
learn a song before.
The average length of time for the
participants to learn a new song is
between 20 minutes and three hours.

Recommendations
and Conclusion
Basedonthefeedbackfromourparticipants,itissafetoconcludethatwe
haveachievedourgoaltocreatingabettertypeofYouTubetutorial.The
testersseemedoverallverysatisfiedwiththeformattingandstructureofthe
videoandonlyhadminorcorrections.
Moving forward, we are planning to add the finger diagrams
into the video so that watchers can hear and see the
instructions more effectively. We are planning to make this
change to satisfy a tester request and make the video even
more effective than it already is.
Overallthetestingshowedthatthevideoisinagoodplaceeditingand
usability-wiseandthereareonlyafewminorchangestobemadeinthe
comingweek.
