KEY SKILLS
As a result of working for fourteen years for two massive engineering companies
(Mahle and Leyland Daf), I have developed expertise in the management of large,
complex manufacturing projects with big budgets and critical deadlines.
I have been an engineer for 26 years and as such have amassed a vast amount of
engineering experience. This results in my ability to look at engineering problems and
seek out solutions with little or no experience of the process.
As an engineer, I have always been keen to understand in detail, how machines /
processes work. This has developed my problem solving skills to a very high level.
WORK EXPERIENCE
MAHLE Engine Systems
Project Engineering Manager Mar 2013 – Current
I am responsible for all Capital Engineering Projects within the Kilmarnock site. I lead a team
of 4 Project Engineers and 1 Senior Controls Engineer staff. Over a 2 year period, in my first
managerial position, my team of 5 engineers were responsible for the specification,
development, prove-off, and installation and commissioning of a number of Capital projects
totalling over £1.2m. In 2015 we have eleven Capital projects equating to a spend of over
£1.4m.
The role also gave me the opportunity to manage the development of the engineers. I had
weekly one to ones with my team to manage short term progress, as well as quarterly and
annual performance reviews to assist in longer term development.
I have also had the opportunity to search for, identify and recruit necessary Engineers to
complement my teams experience and ensure we were in a position to deliver the projects
and support the business demands.
I had a major influence on re-designing the capital project application process to make the
system easier to understand and flow. This had immediate effect and improved the method
and therefore the success of capital approval.

During this time I also managed 3 planning engineers as the site moved from a heritage
MRP planning system over to a SAP planning system. The duration of this project lasted 1
year
Senior Project Engineer 2005-Mar 2013
Within this role, my experience gave me the opportunity to manage and install various
capital projects and major capital investments totalling £1.8m and including a new
continuous casting line to double our existing capacity and ensure the business had the
necessary capacity. Once thought of a ‘black art’ this continuous casting project gave me the
opportunity to show my ability to conquer technical complex processes and prove that sound
engineering methodology along with all the necessary problem solving skills, could deliver a
consistent controlled process. The project was delivered on time and to budget despite
having no previous expertise of casting processes.
Within this role I was given the challenge of satisfying SEPA (Scottish Environmental
Protection Agency) by ensuring that our plating process machinery and floor integrity was
repaired and all controls were put in place so that all risk of chemical spills were dealt with.
BAT (Best Available Techniques) were recognised assessed and implemented where
appropriate. This project resulted in SEPA removing an enforcement notice for the plating
plant area.
Project Engineer 1994-2005
I was employed as production / project engineer working within half bearings unit. These
early years within the company developed my product knowledge and process awareness. I
was the first engineer to introduce robots to Kilmarnock. This was a major step as all
handling had been done with mechanical means before. The introduction of robots gave the
flexibility and speed these mechanical devices previously lacked.
I was responsible for planning and implementing new processes onto the shop floor
including specification, vendor selection, project management, process layouts and small
engineering designs / modifications.
Daily production duties would include:
Fault Finding
Machine efficiencies- Monitoring and assessing actions to eliminate root causes
Training
Developing existing processes to ‘Best Available Techniques’
Eliminating waste and introducing cost reductions through continuous improvement
techniques
ALBION MOTORS (Leyland Daf.)
Manufacturing Engineer 1989-93
Employed as a Manufacturing Engineer, responsible for planning and implementing new
products onto the shop floor, from pre-drawing release through prototype stage to final
component production covering fixturing, tooling, quality, process planning, etc. Production
and prove out of CNC machine programmes for various machine tools. Continual support to
cell for day to day shop floor trouble shooting and method improvements and savings.
Estimating for internal and external enquiries. Introduction and assessment of new

machining techniques and ‘State of the Art’ tooling. Working to budget and timing plans
reporting to Project Manager. Transferring machinery and manufacturing cells/processes
from various locations.
I was part of a major machine/ process transfer of front and rear axle manufacture and
assembly. I was responsible for front and rear hubs and rear brake drum manufacture. I
successfully transferred 26 machines / processes from our plant in Birmingham to Glasgow.
This involved:
All necessary machinery
All tooling
Machine spares
Stocking spares and consumables at Scotstoun
Simplifying and improving existing processes with improved tooling manufacturing
techniques
CNC Turner 1989-93
Employed as a turner developing my skills on basic machine tools to the newest CNC
machinery on site. I was instrumental in developing the use of new ceramic tooling for high
speed machining of cast iron hubs and drums. My experience led to new machinery
techniques to improve tool life being introduced and eventually me writing the cnc programs
for products
