Reference for JILL FREEMAN applying for a Higher Education Fellowship by JANET FRANCIS
1. Reference for staff applying for a Higher Education Fellowship
Name of member of staff applying for a Fellowship: Jill Freeman
I worked with Jill this year in my role of module leader for two modules as follows:
Skills for Computing Professionals (at level 4) - This module is core to the Web Design and Development
awards.
Professional Computing (at level 5) - This module is core to the Computing and Computer Science awards
The two modules have similar goals, namely to
Prepare the students for their industrial placement
To meet certain of the British Computer Society (BCS) benchmarking criteria in the area of making
students aware of professional, moral, social and ethical issues associated with the role of
computing and IT professionals.
To meet certain of the Staffordshire Graduate criteria.
As an Employability Consultant, Jill is part of the careers centre faculty facing team. This post requires her to
maintain an up to date knowledge of professional practice and employability. After observing her teaching, I
am able to confirm that Jill has developed the knowledge and skills required to provide students with an
interesting and informative programme of study in this area.
For the above modules, she prepared and presented several, one hour lectures over a five week period
which she had specially tailored to reflect the awards being undertaken by the students and the nature of
the module. She has a lively and interesting delivery and created an environment in which students felt
comfortable contributing questions and comments.
During her delivery, Jill pointed students to a large number of carefully selected and highly relevant articles
to support her lectures. She also provided access to supporting materials for me to use in my delivery of
further lectures and tutorials on the modules. The materials were made available on the university
Blackboard VLE. The Blackboard VLE presence that Jill has helped to create is of excellent quality. As part of
her work, Jill provides ongoing assistance and feedback to students on the production of CVs and the writing
of covering letters which for these modules form part of an assessment portfolio.
The area of Computing and ICT is changing quickly as is the job market. This means Jill has to continually
update her own knowledge and the materials she uses. The feedback from students reflects that they have
found her up to date knowledge invaluable.
