Jill Frank presented an approach for purposeful production consisting of 8 steps: capture, process, organize, prioritize, calendarize, launch, land, and reflect. The steps are meant to help individuals focus their efforts on the most important work by capturing ideas, organizing tasks, setting a calendar, and continually reflecting on their process. The overall message is that purposeful production is about doing more of the right work through planning and focus.

Hi, I’m Jill Frank and today I’m going to teach you how to produce like a pro- and deliver with purpose.
You can Tweet along with us on Twitter- I’m @jill_frank –Here we go.
This is a composite picture of take offs at LAX, one of the world’s busiest airports.. Flying gives us access to the entire globe, the ability to bend space and time, infinitely connects us. Beyond that, I find airports to be fascinating. Really – its in my DNA to love it…
Here’s a photo of my mom- who was a flight attendant for 30 years for Delta Air Lines- pinning wings on my brother at his winging ceremony from Flight School with the Navy. Proud sister moment he’s a total badass. And while I didn’t choose a career in aviation, I do know a little bit about
Launching planes. Except my planes aren’t 747, or Airbuses, or Boeings. They’re…
810 Episodes of the Oprah Show…
700 Episodes of the Dr Oz Show
And thousands of projects for the clients I have the pleasure of serving at Epsilon Agency, both projects related to production, which I oversee – as well as business operations. So, no I don’t have a career in availation, but I do know a thing or two about
Air Traffic Control. Whether it’s a TV spot, or a banner ad, or a staff plan…
This- doesn’t happen without them.
Them. The unsung heroes of aviation. They are the keepers of logistics, schedules, deliverables, If you’re a producer, or a project manager, leader in your business- then you know – this is where the magic happens.
See – we even have the headset in common
So – if you’re here today, I’m guessing you too are not in aviation, but that maybe you’re here to gain some wisdom on how to launch projects. But it’s not enough to get a plane off the ground, you also have to land it. That’s what we’re here to talk about today.
Today I’m going to give you my process, my trade secrets, my system for launching and landing projects that matter. You walk away with the tools you need to begin to design a system that works for you, for your brand, for your business needs. And why produce on purpose you ask?
I see an opportunity for connection with your audience.
Because my system will give you TIME back in your day.- I can’t give your hours back but I can find ways to bring you more intentionality and focus to your day
Energy – unlike time, which is fixed, we can create magic when we give ourselves space to bring our full energy and intention to our work
And Results– all boars rise – this system has workef for me in professional personal projects,You can turn the wildest dream into actionable execution.
Let’s start with Step 1: Capture. This step is about getting everything that’s going on in your brain, down on paper so you can do something with it. So in the spirit of capturing, I want everyone to take out their phones, laptops, notebooks, however you take notes. Note Takers are history makers .Write down what interests you, I’m going to move fast, you can process it later.
There’s nothing new under the sun. If you’re a creative marketer you may constantly feel like it’s your job to come up with new ides for your brand, for your business- I’m here to tell you that New ideas only come from observing old ideas. So the first step I want you to take to producing like a pro is to capture information that interests you. I want you to be curious about the world around you. Here are tthree ools that will help you focus:
The first is morning pages. This idea comes from Julia ’Cameron’s book The Artist Way. The idea is simple, you have a lot of stuff going on in your head. The first big freedom is getting it all out of your head. Here’s twhat you do – 3 pages of free form writing first thing when you wake up.
Stream of consciousness thinking.
You’re not reading or interpreting your’e just writing. You can do long hand, email yourself, do it on your phone- doesn’t matter, Save it, don’t read it, we’ll come back to it later.
The second tool is using DESIGN THINKING. There are several books on design thinking- this is my favorite. Designing Your Life by 2 product design professors at Stanford.
What I love about designing thinking is that it’s CREATIVE problem solving. There is no one right way to arrive at an answer.
There are all sorts of exercise and prompts to get you going. One that I particularly like is tracking your ENGAGEMENT and your ENEGERY level that you bring to each project you tackle.

All you are doing in the capture phase is getting curious and getting information. You’re leaning into an idea, a project, etc. It’s important to not do anything other than cpautre at this hase, otherwise you risk coming at a project with your own biases/
Another way to put this is to be a YEAH MAYBE person. You can say YEAH RIGHT or you can say YEAH MAYBE. This comes from a keynote at last year’s 3% conference with Emma Mcilroy, founder of cl.othing company Wildfang
Step 2 is to process. Here’s where you’re taking the information you captured and doing something with it.
It’s connecting the dots, and starting to put the puzzle pieces together. Here’s where I want you to identigy a method for capturing and processing.
How many of you take notes at a meeting and then never look at the meeting notes again? You’ve got to make time to process what you’ve captured.
I like to do this at the start of every week as part of my morning routine, which I’ll get into in a bit.
In this phase you’re looking for themes, patterns, and repetition. You’re connecting the dots.

Step 3 is ORGANIZE. Her’es where the magic starts to happen. Now everyone is going to have a. different processs that works for them- Here’s my system :
I start to group my projects iinto 3 tolls-
My email – email capturing other people imput
2) my to do list – the do list list I get to decide
3) my files. - and my files are my homebase, my souces and how I keep everything I ‘ve captured straight
OK- Those first three steps are your runway. Now we are ready to launch some planes.
Step 4 is prioritize. How do all those planes launch? One at a time.
This is the einsenhower matrix. This changed my life.
Take your to do list and put it in this matrix
You may think the URGENT IMPORTANT is the most important category, and sometimes that may be true, but use caution – The important non=urgent is usually where your focus should be.
Here’s why the Tier 2 projects will always get done.Someone will be asking you for these.
It’s the Tier 1 projects that cRepp up. Maybe its planning, maybe its that book you’ve been waiting to write, Whatever it is, deserves your full attention.
Now Tier 3 projects are a death trap, its what I like to call other peoples problems. Remember this is a matrix of what’s important to you.
And then Tier 4 projects, just no. Not urgent, not important? Bye. Delegate, automate or innovate- we’ll talk about those in a bit- get this stuff off your to do list.
Another lens to look at this is through fingureing out what youre really good at doing, and only doing that
This is diversity in action. You have unique perspectives aatelsnt skills- take up space and do the things that only you can do.

Again here is my toolkit-
And I’ll leave you with three things iff I have time:
