2. What is project based
learning?
Project Based Learning is a teaching
method where teachers assign a project
in order for students to gain knowledge
and skills by working for an extended
period of time. Students have the
opportunity to investigate and respond
to an engaging and complex question,
problem, or challenge.
3. Age Group: Grades 1-4 (Elementary School)
Subject: Social Studies
Project: This project based learning assignments will correlate with a
Social Studies class or can be modified to fit other subjects and topics.
Objective: The objective is for students to describe with pictures
different areas in their community and neighborhoods.

4. Lets Travel!
• Description: Students have been learning
about neighborhoods, types of communities,
and what makes a community, borders,
countries, states, provinces, and capitals.
Students will create a flat Stanley in class. They
will have anywhere from 2-4 weeks (depending
on the teacher/class) to travel around their
communities, neighborhoods, states, provinces,
etc while taking photos of or with their flat
Stanley. Students will then create a
presentation, power point, poster, or another
visual including the photos they took. They will
present it to the class and must include 5-7
vocabulary words learned throughout the unit.
This assignment will follow at the end of the
unit and will be a fun project for students.
5. Project Based
Learning: Lets Travel!
Student Requirements
• Create a flat Stanley
• Travel with the Stanley to different
parts in your neighborhood,
community, state or province. Bonus
points for going to borders and other
states and provinces.
• Record your travels with photographs
and notes of places you visit and
photograph.
• Write a summary of your experience
including 5 vocabulary words.
• Create a visual, it can be a power
point, collage, or photo book.
• Present your project to the class.
• Summary (50 points)
• Visual (30 points)
• Presentation (20 points)
• Total : 100 points

6. Project Based
Learning- Flat Stanley
This project will allow for students to have a deeper learning for
students because:
• Students will experience and see first hand what
neighborhoods, communities, borders, etc. are.
• Students will have ample time to discover, research and
experience the objective.
• Students will be required to take notes through photographs.
• Students will need to come up with a written presentation on
their own including academic vocabulary and use it while
presenting.

Learning?
This Assignment:
• Makes school more engaging for students and gives them
hands on experience.
• Connects students and schools with communities and the real
world.
• Includes technology.
• Allows for students to share personal life with teachers and
classmates.
• Improves students learning by allowing first hand experiences.
• Makes teaching more enjoyable for teachers.
8. Closure
At the end of the assignment students will present their
projects to the class and teachers will allow for discussion
among the class. There will be a designated time for
questions and comments. If students are uncomfortable with
their photos or neighborhood they may choose photos from
magazines or others printed sources. If students do not have
a camera a digital one will be provided along with a
printing resource.
