DEFINITION, NATURE,

IN GUIDANCE PROCESS
DEFINITION OF TEST USED
IN GUIDANCE PROCESS
Test are tasks which define ability.
They may be investigation, study
review or an inquisition. Test help
measure the individual, especially
those unexplored ones.
PURPOSE OF TEST USED IN
GUIDANCE PROCESS
1. To determine student achievement level and
progress.
2. To gain data for diagnostic purposes.
3. To ascertain aptitudes.
4. To provide for the identification of interests.
5. To improve instruction.
6. To determine existing self-concepts and
attitudes.
7. To ascertain social adjustments.
Limitation of Testing
LOW MOTIVATION OF SOME STUDENTS
•The assumption that all students are equally
interested in a task or enjoy the same
stimulation is erroneous. Test scores must
represent a student’s best efforts if they are to
be true indication of ability. Indifference in
attention, low commitment and generally low
motivation tend to invalidate test result.
RELATIVE NARROWNESS OF THE TRAITS
MEASURED
•A test is designed to measure a certain trait
or quality or combination of traits. With
even the best of tests, the traits being
measured constitute a relatively narrow
aspect of one’s total make-up. Many other
factors or perhaps equal significance are
not assessed.
LOW VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY
FOR SOME STUDENTS
•Scores obtained may be relatively invalid or
unreliable for a particula: pupil. However, this
is not likely to be evident, since computation
for validity and reliability are based on large
numbers of subjects. Thus, a pupil obtaining
scores in appropriate in terms of his true
abilities is likely to go unnoticed.
THE UNAVAILABILITY OF LOCAL
NORMS
•Local norms are not always computed or made
available. Reliance upon the norms in the
publisher’s test manual for test interpretation is
then necessary, although local norms may have
greater value for guidance purposes within a
particular school. Proper use of both local
norms and norms published in the test manual
should be made.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS
•A failure by students to follow directions,
which provide the standards for a test, can
result in an invalidation of the results. In
any case, established procedures must be
observed by the test administrator and by
the students; otherwise the results are
value less.

PSYCHNOLOGICAL
TEST
TYPESOFTEST
It is essentially an objective and standardized measure
of a sample behavior. It is designed to measure one or
more aspects of a total personality by means of verbal
or non-verbal responses or by means of other behaviors.
Assessments are separated into
4 phases:
1) Interviews and information
gathering
2) Testing
3) Analysis, formulation, and
report writing
4) Feedback session to ensure
accurate understanding and
distribution of information.
PSYCHNOLOGICAL
TEST
TYPESOFTEST
PSYCHNOLOGICAL
TEST
TYPESOFTEST
It is the sum total of an
individual’s behavior and
includes an individual’s
overt and inner feelings.
Designed to measure such
characteristics as emotional
adjustments, social
relations, and the
motivational aspects of
behavior.
PERSONALITY
TEST
TYPESOFTEST
• a) Objective test - a test consisting of factual
questions requiring extremely short answers
that can be quickly and unambiguously
scored by anyone with an answer key.
• b) Projective test – the individual projects
or shows his personality through responses
in a more or less unstructured test situation.
The test measures personality as a whole
rather than on a specific trait or behavior. It
aims to know that individual’s manner of
striving with life’s problems, of integrating
these with his perception.

How Are Personality Tests Used?
•For assessing theories
•To look at changes in personality
•To evaluate the effectiveness of
therapy
•Diagnosing psychological
problems
•Screening job candidates
PERSONALITY
TEST
TYPESOFTEST
PROJECTIVE
TEST
TYPESOFTEST
• A projective test is a type of personality test in
which an individual offers responses to
ambiguous scenes, words, or images. The goal
of such tests is to uncover the hidden conflicts
or emotions that the individual projects onto
the test with the hope that these issues can
then be addressed through psychotherapy or
other appropriate treatments.
• All projective tests catch the subject off guard
that is they are designed to make the subject
reveal himself without being aware of the fact
that he is doing so.

OTHER TYPES OF TESTS
•ACHIEVEMENT TEST
Achievement refers to a student’s level of
accomplishments in the various subject areas.
It is designed to measure the outcomes of
instruction, the progress pupils have made in
attaining proficiency as a result of training or
learning.
DIFFERENT APPROACHES IN
ACHIEVEMENT TESTING
•FORMATIVE EVALUATION- testing occurs
constantly with learning so that teachers can
evaluate the effectiveness of teaching methods
along with the assessment of students’ abilities.
•SUMMATIVE EVALUATION- testing is done at the
end of the instructional unit. The test score is
seen as the summation of all knowledge learned
during a particular subject unit.
APTITUDE TESTS
•Design to assess what a person is capable of
doing or predict what a person is able to
learn or do given the right education and
instruction.
•Represents a person’s level of competency
to perform a certain type of task.
Examples of Aptitude test
1. DIFFERENTIAL APTITUDE TEST (DAT) –measures which
field does a student excel.
2. PHILIPPINE APTITUDE CLASSIFICATION TEST (PACT)-
measure specific abilities and predict probable
performance in various courses.
3. PHILIPPINE APTITUDE TEST FOR TEACHERS (PATT)- an
instrument designed to measure aptitudes which are
deemed predictive of abilities required in the teaching
profession.
INTEREST TESTS
•Provides scores from which patterns of interest
are established. These patterns indicate the
kinds of vocational activities that have the
greatest are shown on the profile sheets.
•Areas of interests are shown not specific jobs.
Their use contributes to more realistic
planning by a student in considering the
vocational possibilities open to him.
1.KUDER PREFERENCE RECORD
2.GUILFORD-ZIMMERMAN INTEREST
INVENTORY
3.OHIO VOCATIONAL INTEREST
SURVEY
Examples of Interest test
DIAGNOSTIC TEST
•The purpose of this test is to
determine the weaknesses of
the individual so that
remedies could be done to
overcome it.
PROGNOSTIC TEST
•Predict how well a student is likely to do in
a certain school, subject or task.
•IOWA PLACEMENT EXAMINATION- foretells
which of the subjects in the curriculum
an examinee is doing good.
Measure general
intelligence particularly
the IQ of the counselee
and the pupil potential for
learning. These test
normally yield a mental
age, intelligence quotient
and a percentile rank.
IntelligenceTest
TYPESOFTEST
these are designed to
determine the skills,
special abilities and
techniques that make an
individual fit for given
occupation. These test are
not comprehensive enough
but they help in the
selection of applicants for
particular job or
occupation.
