Have cell phones and social media made families closer or not?
The cell phones and social media have changed the way families communicate and time
spent together. The penetration of mobile phones in the society has led about many
distractions such as social networks, entertainment and much more. Turkle (2011) has
suggested that technologies are pulling families apart but other contend that this new medium
has become an integral part of the mainstream family and aids in staying connected and with
scheduling. The main research question relates to analyzing interaction within such a
social-technical family system. A secondary question entails how the interactions with smart
phones play out in two different environments, the everyday family, and the family vacation.
Relationship plays a crucial part in our society through interaction and bonding in the
family. In the past these bonds were strengthened by spending leisure time together as a family
but technology has provided an opportunity for entertainment and connected to social media
and while spending time physically togetherness but emotionally separated (Kennedy-Eden,
2014). The mobile phones act as a connection between close family members and to friends,
family and social network and information beyond.
Although communication in families has been changed by the practical application, it has
not lessened the value of family ties. Affection and socialization skills are nurtured through
continuous family fundamental interaction (Belcher, Peckuonis, & Deforge, 2011). However,
in the western life, the families spend more time apart on a day to daybasis because of multiple
occupations and shift work; it's of the essence during a vacation to spend time together as
advisable by (Valentine, 2006). The family vacation is a long standing tradition. It is a
possibility to spend time together, bond as a family, travel to new destinations, and create
memories (Hilbrecht, Shaw, Delamere, & Havitz, 2008).

The world of sociology has had an important endeavor with the interpreted investigation
which is of huge significant. It is through the study of sociology that allows for a better
apprehension and perceptiveness into today’s society according to (McGrath, 2012). New
media technologies and the impact they are havingon social interaction within the household is
a topic that is evident and of great importance to the present world. It is through this research
that one of the most important institutions of society: the home and the family, will be looked at
in greater detail and it is in this institution where society functions. The study investigates the
role that new media technologies play in the development of social interactions in family life.
Research on media technologies in today’s society focuses on merits and value of the
impact. My investigation will yield a greater insight into and the appreciation of the social
interactions of family members within the household. My study will have a direct bearing on
the initial efforts of new media technologies are having on the present world (McGrath,
2012).The research helps to contribute towards finding solutions to the new social
phenomenon that is new media technologies. The research ultimately provides a greater
understanding that will enable individuals to control the conditions of social life and therefore,
help improve these conditions.
In conclusion to the study, suggests that the mobile phone has led to distraction to family
communication with much time spent on social media. But it's also evident that the cell phone
and social media is playing a bigger role in the western countries to bind families together as
they spend more time in dual occupation and shift work.
