Statement of Intent
It is extremely gratifying to assist students, faculty and staff who are striving to solve environmental issues on both
the local and global scale. My hardworking nature, capacity to learn new skills quickly, and strong organization
abilities have served the Environmental Studies & Science concentrations well. Since my time at Brown I have been a
part of many transitions within my unit, as the Center for Environmental Studies went through changes in leadership,
the implementation of a new curriculum, and ultimately merging with the Institute at Brown for Environment and
Society. I am inspired by Brown’s dedication to solving critical environmental issues and its goal in serving as a leader
in finding and implementing solutions.

Accomplishments:
 Continually providing comprehensive assistance to students & faculty on navigating and modifying forms in ASK
(Advising Sidekick), additionally working with tech support to resolve issues and update the system.
 Brought a level of organization and accounting to the ENVS budget not previously administered
 Improved organization of the UEL Community Garden through assisting in the formation of a board; significantly
updating the garden contract; working with members to clean up plots and reorganize spaces; drafting a more
accurate garden map; creating Google docs to track membership and contact info; establishing better forms of
communication with members; administering a stricter hiring process for student garden managers
 Through diligently working with concentrators and their advisors, students are on better track to fulfill their
requirements than in previous years.

 Maintaining a positive connection with students by being available to answer a range of inquires; providing
technical support; sending out multiple notices about updates and requirements; holding info sessions on
research poster design; listening to their thoughts and concerns
 Significantly enhanced the ENVS system for handling student payroll by creating spreadsheets to track which
students are hired each semester, the names of their supervisors, accounts supporting their positions, contact
info, job titles, hourly pay and amount of hours they should log on a weekly basis
 Worked with facilities and employees to improve the cleanliness, upkeep, and organization of the Urban

Duties:
 Oversee and manage the undergraduate concentration program through:
o Organizing research presentations and honors defenses
o Collecting and submitting data to the Registrar regarding finals info for courses. Also, keeping faculty abreast
of the date, time & place of exams, and deadlines for grades
o Certifying completion of concentration requirements for ENVS seniors by reviewing their records and
submitting forms to the Registrar.
o Providing up to date materials on requirements to students and advisors through the website, Google docs,
e-mail correspondence, and verbal interactions
o Corresponding and meeting with students to ensure that they are on track with requirements and being
available to answer questions about the concentration, various procedures, capstone options and resources
available to them through ENVS.
o Producing guides for students and advisors to assist with comprehension of systems & expectations
o Ensuring faculty classroom and technical needs are supported
o Creating or modifying course evaluation forms in Banner and providing copies of completed student
evaluations to professors for their courses, once cleared by the Registrar
o Working with the Registrar to assign independent study sections to new faculty advising ENVS concentrator
capstone projects
o Creating course schedules for each semester in collaboration with the Deputy Director of Environmental
Studies and Science (DESS)

informed of updates and new requirements, frequently reviewing various Brown websites to remain current on

 Administer alumni relations through implementing databases, maintaining contact with alums, and providing
regular updates on job opportunities and ENVS happenings.
 Manage process for MBL/ SES program (semester in environmental science at the Wood’s Hole Marine Biological
Laboratory) through: Sending applicant data to admissions; getting students signed up for classes through
Registrar & setting them up in Banner; working with Bursar to handle billing for non-Brown University students;
ensuring student health & meal plan fees are waved; assisting with processing of invoices from MBL for tuition
reimbursements paid for non-Brown students
 Support the Deputy Director of Environmental Studies & Science (DESS) by participating in strategic and logistical
planning. Reinforce effective decision making by gathering, analyzing and summarizing information as requested
by the DESS. Stay abreast of issues and areas of concern and bring such matters to the attention of the DESS.
 Attend department meetings, take minutes, and follow-up with appropriate individuals to ensure agreed upon
action is taken
 Oversee all financial matters through:
o Working with DESS on course budgets
o Running multiple financial reports throughout the year to ensure budgets aren’t exceeded and expenses are
being charged to the appropriate accounts
o Facilitating the processing of expense reports, journal transfers, direct pay of airfare requests, hospitality
reimbursements, professional service agreements, requisitions & purchase orders, bank transfers, and salary
re-allocations
o Overseeing all purchasing card transactions for ENVS
o Tracking labor reports
o Developing and implementing financial and record-keeping systems, databases, and procedures for tracking
and recording budget and expenditures across all internal and external funding sources
o Maintaining communication with the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, Controller’s Office, Purchasing and
other departments as needed, to stay up to date on Brown financial policies and practices. Ensure all
transactions are prepared and processed accurately, and that faculty receive appropriate budgetary support
 Providing continual assessment of operational practices and developing and implementing policies and
procedures for an effective and safe working environment.
 Administering staffing needs by: Hiring, training, supervising support staff and student employees; assigning
tasks and supervising ongoing activities and projects; working with staff to develop goals, complete periodic
performance evaluations and resolve personnel issues; assisting faculty in writing student TA & RA job
descriptions
 Maintain inventory of furniture and equipment and plan for maintenance and replacement as needed
 Manage space allocations and monitor building maintenance, repairs and renovation. Evaluate, schedule, and
plan for both interior and exterior UEL work to be done by Facilities.
 Coordinate all concentration and student events including commencement, advisor meetings, lecture series,
student gatherings and other ENVS social events.
 Management of the Seasons of Change Traveling Exhibit through: working with exhibit manager to gather signed
contracts from various venues and collect exhibition fees; providing technical data sheets to various hosts;
managing the exhibit account
 Assist with faculty searches, which includes such duties as: Building search positions in Interfolio, uploading data
into the system and sharing candidate application materials with search committee members & voting faculty;
scheduling search candidate meetings and events; facilitating travel arrangements & restaurant bookings;
producing & maintaining sensitive documents; corresponding with candidates and references; taking committee
meeting minutes
 Coordinate and administer processes that support faculty appointments, promotions/tenure reviews, and
reappointments by: Downloading and organizing course reviews & enrollment data; keeping up to date CV’s and

 Maintain records and authorization of FAF’s and manage Human Resources functions in Workday through:
o Submitting appointment memo’s and Faculty Action Forms (FAF) for non-regular faculty to the Dean of the
Faculty’s office
o Making sure faculty sign appointment letters and submit signed letters to the Dean of the Faculty, keeping
copies on file for reference
o Confirming faculty costing is correct in Workday
o Assisting in annual processing of merit for staff and processing staff annual reviews
 Work closely with other academic departments to ensure joint faculty appointments are properly accounted
 Participate in developing the new fiscal year budget in consultation with the DESS through looking at previous
spending trends and assessing future needs

Accomplishments:
 Designed a more professional look for ENVS web pages, improving their functionality as well as aesthetic
 Provided new system to communicate thesis requirements and schedule presentation times with students and
advisors through Google documents
 Updated antiquated systems for loaned equipment & distribution of building keys by creating & tracking through
Google documents
 Increased cross list course offerings by actively reviewing Banner Web, searching for new classes that could

Solving Environmental Issues

  • 1. Statement of Intent It is extremely gratifying to assist students, faculty and staff who are striving to solve environmental issues on both the local and global scale. My hardworking nature, capacity to learn new skills quickly, and strong organization abilities have served the Environmental Studies & Science concentrations well. Since my time at Brown I have been a part of many transitions within my unit, as the Center for Environmental Studies went through changes in leadership, the implementation of a new curriculum, and ultimately merging with the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society. I am inspired by Brown’s dedication to solving critical environmental issues and its goal in serving as a leader in finding and implementing solutions. Jeanne Loewenstein  jeannel@cox.net  539 Main St.  Warren, RI 02885  401-245-5273 2  Maintaining a positive connection with students by being available to answer a range of inquires; providing technical support; sending out multiple notices about updates and requirements; holding info sessions on research poster design; listening to their thoughts and concerns  Significantly enhanced the ENVS system for handling student payroll by creating spreadsheets to track which students are hired each semester, the names of their supervisors, accounts supporting their positions, contact info, job titles, hourly pay and amount of hours they should log on a weekly basis  Worked with facilities and employees to improve the cleanliness, upkeep, and organization of the Urban Environmental Lab; making personal donations of items to create a homey feel in communal spaces. This has led to a more comfortable environment and lent additional utility to meeting spaces.  The extensive guides I have created for concentration and capstone requirements have led to less confusion among students and advisors about academic expectations  Lauded for accurate and in depth minutes taken at meetings Duties:  Oversee and manage the undergraduate concentration program through: o Organizing research presentations and honors defenses o Collecting and submitting data to the Registrar regarding finals info for courses. Also, keeping faculty abreast of the date, time & place of exams, and deadlines for grades o Certifying completion of concentration requirements for ENVS seniors by reviewing their records and submitting forms to the Registrar. o Providing up to date materials on requirements to students and advisors through the website, Google docs, e-mail correspondence, and verbal interactions o Corresponding and meeting with students to ensure that they are on track with requirements and being available to answer questions about the concentration, various procedures, capstone options and resources available to them through ENVS. o Producing guides for students and advisors to assist with comprehension of systems & expectations o Ensuring faculty classroom and technical needs are supported o Creating or modifying course evaluation forms in Banner and providing copies of completed student evaluations to professors for their courses, once cleared by the Registrar o Working with the Registrar to assign independent study sections to new faculty advising ENVS concentrator capstone projects o Creating course schedules for each semester in collaboration with the Deputy Director of Environmental Studies and Science (DESS) o Facilitating nominations for Sigma Xi and senior prizes. Also, processing various forms of student funding and awards o Collecting & maintaining student documents, such as: Student thesis, practicum and research reports; summaries & abstracts; digital copies of research posters and resumes; forms for authorization of completion, and research release or confidentiality o Assisting in the administering of honors by: Filing proposals and keeping advisors informed of requirements candidates must fulfill in order to be cleared. Also having thesis & concentration advisors provide information on the quality of honors candidate’s thesis, as well as overall performance in the concentration, and then submitting that data to the CCC for evaluation o Preparing and coordinating course contribution data for University documents (i.e. Banner, CAB and University Catalogue)  Keep current with University policies and procedures by: Attending department manager meeting in order to be informed of updates and new requirements, frequently reviewing various Brown websites to remain current on important info, and attending numerous trainings throughout the year

Jeanne Loewenstein  jeannel@cox.net  539 Main St.  Warren, RI 02885  401-245-5273 3  Administer alumni relations through implementing databases, maintaining contact with alums, and providing regular updates on job opportunities and ENVS happenings.  Manage process for MBL/ SES program (semester in environmental science at the Wood’s Hole Marine Biological Laboratory) through: Sending applicant data to admissions; getting students signed up for classes through Registrar & setting them up in Banner; working with Bursar to handle billing for non-Brown University students; ensuring student health & meal plan fees are waved; assisting with processing of invoices from MBL for tuition reimbursements paid for non-Brown students  Support the Deputy Director of Environmental Studies & Science (DESS) by participating in strategic and logistical planning. Reinforce effective decision making by gathering, analyzing and summarizing information as requested by the DESS. Stay abreast of issues and areas of concern and bring such matters to the attention of the DESS.  Attend department meetings, take minutes, and follow-up with appropriate individuals to ensure agreed upon action is taken  Oversee all financial matters through: o Working with DESS on course budgets o Running multiple financial reports throughout the year to ensure budgets aren’t exceeded and expenses are being charged to the appropriate accounts o Facilitating the processing of expense reports, journal transfers, direct pay of airfare requests, hospitality reimbursements, professional service agreements, requisitions & purchase orders, bank transfers, and salary re-allocations o Overseeing all purchasing card transactions for ENVS o Tracking labor reports o Developing and implementing financial and record-keeping systems, databases, and procedures for tracking and recording budget and expenditures across all internal and external funding sources o Maintaining communication with the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, Controller’s Office, Purchasing and other departments as needed, to stay up to date on Brown financial policies and practices. Ensure all transactions are prepared and processed accurately, and that faculty receive appropriate budgetary support  Providing continual assessment of operational practices and developing and implementing policies and procedures for an effective and safe working environment.  Administering staffing needs by: Hiring, training, supervising support staff and student employees; assigning tasks and supervising ongoing activities and projects; working with staff to develop goals, complete periodic performance evaluations and resolve personnel issues; assisting faculty in writing student TA & RA job descriptions  Maintain inventory of furniture and equipment and plan for maintenance and replacement as needed  Manage space allocations and monitor building maintenance, repairs and renovation. Evaluate, schedule, and plan for both interior and exterior UEL work to be done by Facilities.  Coordinate all concentration and student events including commencement, advisor meetings, lecture series, student gatherings and other ENVS social events.  Management of the Seasons of Change Traveling Exhibit through: working with exhibit manager to gather signed contracts from various venues and collect exhibition fees; providing technical data sheets to various hosts; managing the exhibit account  Assist with faculty searches, which includes such duties as: Building search positions in Interfolio, uploading data into the system and sharing candidate application materials with search committee members & voting faculty; scheduling search candidate meetings and events; facilitating travel arrangements & restaurant bookings; producing & maintaining sensitive documents; corresponding with candidates and references; taking committee meeting minutes  Coordinate and administer processes that support faculty appointments, promotions/tenure reviews, and reappointments by: Downloading and organizing course reviews & enrollment data; keeping up to date CV’s and

Hasbro - (Temp Assignment via Silverman McGovern) :: Pawtucket, RI :: Summer 2009 - Fall 2010 Assistant Project Coordinator Accomplishments:  Caught errors with artwork and preproduction samples submitted for shipment to licensors, hence shortening the length of time for receiving approvals and avoiding costly mistakes  Reused shipping materials, cutting down on waste and expenses  Took initiative to collaborate with project coordinators and prepress in order to keep assignments on schedule Duties:  Updated Hasbro’s GMS (Global Milestone System) with notes provided by project coordinators & managers via Topline meetings. This included: o Modifying dates, adding new projects (mainline & EU) and components o Loading material numbers and making sure they linked to the correct projects o Revising notes o Contacting prepress regarding completion dates  Generated & posted weekly Topline reports to be accessed by various teams  Checked reports for overlooked updates and inconsistencies  Assisted Licensing Coordinator by generating forms; shipping packaging art, preproduction samples and final samples; tracking shipments, archiving forms and updating GMS with feedback from licensors.
