![Development Over Time The first microscope was made in England at the end of the 16 th century and was believed to the result of looking through the wrong end of a telescope. In 1597 Zaccharias Jansseen and his son, Han Jansseen, realised that two lenses, arranged one at the eyepiece and one near the sample, resulted in a significant enlargement. As the designs were still based around telescopes they were three feet tall and heavy and were also ineffective with a magnification level of 9x. Antony Van Leeuwenhoek was the first man to make and use a useful microscope with a magnification of 270x in the late 17 th century. This was the result of superior lenses he produced by grinding and polishing a small glass ball. Microscopes used today generally refer to compound microscopes that use multiple lenses to in order to reduce the focal length without making the image difficult to distinguish. Until the mid 18 th century microscopes were limited by lens quality. Research by Otto Schott on optical glass along with the production of fine optical tools addressed this limitation. And through Ernst Abbe's study of optical principles resulted in a maximum resolution 10x greater than Leeuwenhoek's microscope was achieved in 1870. During the 18 th and 19 th centuries the microscope evolved to be much like how we see them today. It included the addition of stages and slides, as well as the practise of staining samples to make the images much clearer. The 20 th century had few changes to the basics of light microscopes, but for a standardisation of parts.
