This presentation was created for an Environmental Science class with Ms. Holly Hayden at MiT. The presentation was made to be light and colorful, and utilizes animations for emphasis on subject points.
4. Controlled Chemical
The use of Pesticides is highly regulated
by the EPA and multiple state-level
agencies. Any non-personal use of
pesticides requires a license, permit, and
semi-frequent inspections.
5. Pesticides prevent a Plethora of Benefits
• More Crops
• Less Disease
• Cheaper Food
• Protects against Farmer Losses
6. The Pesticide Scare is Fake
• Biological Pesticides possess
no risk to humans.
– Microbial Pesticides
– Plant-Incorporated
Protectants
– Biochemical Pesticides
• Microbial Pesticides
– From fungi, bacteria.
• PIPs
– Pesticide protein genes can
be introduced to seeds.
• Biochemical Pesticides
– Pheromones and Pyrethins
(damages insect nervous
system)
7. Chemical Pesticides are great!
• Some Include:
– Organophosphates
– Carbamates
– Organochlorines
– Pyrethroids
– Neonicotinoids
• Large majority contains
mostly plant-material.
• Grown and then processed
to extract ingredients.
• Controlled by EPA
• Only harmful when used
improperly.
8. However, pesticides can cause illnesses WHEN
NOT USED CORRECTLY.
• Diarriah
• Nausea
• Abdominal Cramps
• Increased Chances for
ADD/ADHD
• Possible Correlation with
Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
(Blood Cancer)
• When used improperly
• When used improperly
• When used improperly
• Unproven, studies similar to
Vaccine ADHD Scare
• Unproven, only with one
specific pesticide (2,4 D)
10. Really not an Argument (Pesticides win every
time!)
Pro-Pesticide
• Makes it easier to produce
food:
– Cheaper
– Larger
– More
• Prevent disease and
infections.
• Protect the economy.
Anti-Pesticide
• Based on personal ethics
and morals, not science.
• Argument comprised of
Speculation and Theories.
• People have the choice to
eat organically.
