The coastal dunes system are the habitat for many unique species (like Acacia spp and Terminalia spp) that give special features to it. Besides the natural importance of these habitats, the coastal dunes are also important to act as a barrier to the rise of the sea during extreme storms, ensuring the maintenance of the beach. In the years that will come, they will be fundamental to stop or at least decrease the rise of the sea level due to climate change. Am I harmfull or harmless? Every human action has a consequence. Sometimes the simple act of walk in the coastal dunes may represent a threat to some of the most instable dunes. This point out, if you ever played or walked on top of them you might had some impact. However, the majority of this systems are incredibly resistant's in order to resist the action of the sea. The major threat to these systems is the real estate pressure and the construction in sensitive sites, that compromise the maintenance of all the dune. How can I help to conserve them? The best way to conserve the coastal dunes system is to decrease the major threat to it: the pressure from the real state industry. Do not buy houses or any other infrastructures built on top on dunes. Do not illigaly build on top of dunes. Do not illigaly remove sand from dunes.
