2. What Is a Carrier Grade Server?
• Carrier grade servers are traditional 1U and
2U rack mount PC servers that are NEBS
level 3 certified.
• These servers are designed to have high
percentages of uptime - keeping, phones
and other services on both during and after
natural disasters like earthquakes and
thunderstorms.
3. NEBS Compliance
• NEBS stands for: Network Equipment-Building
System
• NEBS is the common set of safety, spatial, and
environmental design guidelines applied to
telecommunications equipment in the United
States.
• Carrier grade servers are NEBS level 3
certified. Level 3 has strict specifications for fire
suppression, thermal margin testing, vibration
resistance, airflow pattern, and partial operation
requirements.
4. Dell's Solution
R620 T
Is a general use 2 socket, 1U form factor carrier
grade server. It offers a front panel access
hot swap and has balanced memory and I/O.
6. R720 T PowerEdge Carrier Grade
Server
R720 T
Is a general use 2 socket, 2U form factor rack
server. It offers extensive local storage and
scalability for data heavy operations. Identity
modules simplifies maintenance of
customized BIOS.
8. Making a Carrier Grade Server
• All air movers within server must have their
own filter.
• Filtered bezels keep incoming air clean,
filters are washable replaceable.
• Bezels are a toolless install.
• DC power.
• Strict NEBS testing for heat, dust arrestment
and seismic testing.
9. Outside Testing
• Certification is done by an outside testing
facility.
• Each was ran against GR63 and GR1089

10. Balanced Approach to Price and
Functionality
Dell carrier grade servers are designed to offer
the telecommunications industry a single
solution for carrier grade products with
affordable server options. Scalability is a
primary concern for telcos. The PowerEdge
design enables telco servers to be added to
existing rack solutions.
