This document discusses cardiomyopathy, which is a disease of the heart muscle. Cardiomyopathy is a heterogeneous group of diseases associated with mechanical and/or electrical dysfunction of the myocardium. There are three primary patterns: hypertrophic, dilated, and restrictive. Symptoms include dyspnea, fatigue, arrhythmia, chest pain, and edema. Diagnosis involves physical exam, labs, ECG, echocardiogram, heart catheterization, and endomyocardial biopsy. Causes can be genetic, inflammatory, toxic, metabolic, or idiopathic. Treatment focuses on symptoms and transplantation may be required in some cases.
