Information about the Filipiniana Collection
The collection has its origin in the marriage of Maria Africa and James
Beebe in 1970. Both were teaching part-time at Columban College in
Olongapo City, while Maria was working on a Masters degree at De La Salle
in Manila and James was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Zambales helping to
improve the elementary science curriculum. Both Maria and James brought
to the marriage books they had collected. After almost 50 years the
collection includes materials about the Philippines, work by Filipinos,
material about Filipino-Americans, material authored by Maria and James,
and material about Peace Corps Volunteers in the Philippines. Most of the
material was collected while Maria and James served as Peace Corps
Volunteer in Bontoc, Mountain Province (1970-1973), during the time
James was doing field work for his PhD on farmers in a village in Bulacan
(1976), during the time Maria was doing field work for her PhD on rural
credit in the Philippines (1990), during four years James was a Foreign
Service Officer working for USAID in Manila (1984 - 1987), during the time
James had a Fulbright specialist assignment at De La Salle in 2015, and
during Maria’s trips to the Philippines related to her work with the Filipina
Woman’s Network (FWN) and the release of her two books on successful
Filipina women leaders abroad.
The collection is eclectic. Some were gifts to Maria and James, most were
purchased. A few were discards from the Peace Corps Regional office in
Baguio when it closed in about 1973 and the person in charge indicated
they planned to dispose of the “obsolete” material.
The draft list of materials was created using the new version of RefWorks
ProCite. In some instances, the program pulled in reference information
that is not accurate and in many places failed to pull in the number of
pages, publisher, and publisher location. No attempt has been made to
indicate the content of journals. Both the database and the draft list of
materials need editing.
