Becoming a Coordinator requires more than Xs
and 0s. It’s about relationships, and creating an
identity. It is about the Ability to Influence Others.
•The coach has no direct control over what actually happens on the field.
Rather, he has Influence.
•The most successful coaches know how to influence not only the plays that
are called on the field, but have the ability to capture the Hearts and Minds
of the players executing those plays.
•Show the utmost respect for each player
•Show true conviction and passion for the goals that are set
•Never take credit, always give the credit to the players
•Help them play from an inner strength
•Establish a culture and refer back to that culture (Tradition, Spirit, Honor)
•Always have the end goal in mind
•Create Trust
1. Be prepared- on time/ organized
2. Provide accurate detail information
3. Create simple successes
4. Be passionate about what you do
Make Them Believers
•Create an atmosphere of respect
1. Establish clear guidelines and expectations
2. Treat them as you would want your son treated
3. Hold yourself accountable for your own actions
Sometimes that means apologizing
•Be the Expert
1. Hone your craft
2. Research and Development
3. Study the trends
4. Be well versed in the history of the game
5. Be the go to guy
Be The Teacher
1. Have the right information
2. Create a cohesive learning environment
3. Know your audience – different learning
styles
4. Adapt to your talent
5. Make sure your players know the
information
“As a coach, you have a deep responsibility to your players. It is
your job to know the young people you are teaching, the game you
are teaching, and how the game of football can bring your players
to their highest potential as happy and contributing citizens,
husbands, and fathers” Tom Flores
•Your character will speak volumes to the players you
influence.
•Will your players see a leader who lives a life of integrity?
• If your players respect you, and do so genuinely, not only for
the Xs and 0s, but for whom you are as a person, you will be
on your way to coaching success.
Know yourself and you will win all battles.
-SUN TZU
Smart

Tough
Your philosophy as a coach is critical. Why are you
coaching? Is it for your ego or to develop young people
to be the best they can be?
•A good coach really cares about the people on the team and their
success on and off the field.
•You have to be good with people and have a desire to inspire
young men to victory in order to have success.
•What is your coaching Pedigree?
-Who do you know? ~ Who knows you?
-Have you made a name for yourself? ~ Position Mastery
-Did you leave in good terms with everybody?
•You must have patience
-21 years in this profession, I found it’s much
easier to become a Defensive Coordinator, then
becoming an Offensive Coordinator, at least at
the larger universities or even in the NFL.
How Do I Ascend In this
profession?
 Diversify yourself
 Become a Master at multiple positions
120 FBS school
 240 possibilities (Coordinator)
 23 Currently (African American) 28 Total (10%/12%)
 8 Offensive Coordinators ~ 12 Total (34%)
 15 Defensive Coordinators ~ 16 Total (65%)
 If your desire is to ascend into a Leadership role, there must
be TRUST; that you CAN and are willing to do more
PERCEPTION IS
REALITY
 How are you viewed by others?
Are you a Foot Soldier OR Are you a General?
SEE PAST CURRENT POSITION
Adversity can make us stronger, smarter, better,
tougher. Most worthwhile things in the competitive
world come wrapped in adversity.
-John Wooden-
•The percentages are low in regards to leadership positions in the FBS, however, in
order to be successful in life you are going to have to deal with adversity.
•Confront the adversity, and overcome those who try to use road blocks to derail
your path.
•This is not the easiest career path. But with the right knowledge, experience,
connections, luck, and the love of the game, you too can achieve your goal of being
a Coordinator. Never allow anyone to tell what you can or can not do!
THE STOCKDALETHE STOCKDALE
PARADOXPARADOX
 Retain faith that you will prevail in the
end, regardless of the difficulties.
AND at the same time
 Confront the most brutal facts of your
current reality, whatever they might be.
"He who is not courageous
enough to take risks will
accomplish nothing in life."
