IT Engineer Creates Hindi Language Browser
This is the story of a small­town Indian who has taken giant strides in the
software sphere to reduce the IT gap between rural and urban India.

Thursday, February 04, 2010: Jagdeep Dangi, a
software engineer from Ganj Basoda in Visidha District
of Madhya Pradesh, has created a Hindi language
browser which will serve as a huge boon for villagers
all over India. This software will help Hindi computer
users to type, without changing fonts or the keyboard,
in Unicode­based Devanagari script (Hindi, Marathi,
Sanskrit) and Roman script (English) jointly on the
same page. Dangi has named both software as
Prakhar Devanagari Font Parivartak and the Prakhar
Devanagari lipik.
"I have been in the software line for many years now," Dangi says, with a touch of
pride. "I wanted to do something for the rural masses and hit upon the idea of
creating a Hindi Internet browser. It took me five years of sustained work to build the
model, and I hope this will bridge the digital divide that exists between the rural and
urban masses."
The thing that foxed most computer users was the issue of varied fonts and the
resulting conflict when the user types in Hindi. Conversion of a text into another type
was a big hurdle, with the essence of the subject being lost. But this software has
magically solved this problem. It would now be possible to convert any type of
ASCII/ISCII (ISCII 8 bit code) fonts to Unicode (16 bit code) in computers with greater
ease.
Dangi is a man of many parts. "I have also created the world’s first Hindi Internet
Explorer, the i­Browser++, a Hindi­English­Hindi Shabdkosh and a global word
translator (Anuvadak)," he informs. "My software has reached out to millions of Hindi
speakers, who are far removed from India's English­speaking metro areas."
He has been included in the Limca Book of Records for creating the Hindi ibrowser, but
is far from finished yet and is planning more ventures in the exciting field of
information technology.
