1. Urban design is the design of towns and
cities, streets and spaces. Cities are made
of up many building blocks, including
individual buildings, streets, and
neighborhoods.
2. Urban design is the discipline between
planning and architecture.
3. It addresses both aesthetic and functional
issues, city look good and work well.
4. Design of the
“Public realm”
1. Involves getting ideas and opinions from the community
through public participation in planning exercises.
2. Open space, streets, sidewalks, and plazas between and
around buildings and the “public interest” issues of
buildings.
3. Issues to be considered in existing development, proposed
development, utility infrastructure, streets framework, open
space framework, environmental framework, and sustainable
development principles.

complementary architectural styles, along with a small park and
a few small shops with attractive storefronts, all linked together
by safe sidewalks and pathways.

Areas in the
Philippines
Considers population density, street pattern,
and presence of establishments and facilities
for basic services.
(According to PSA, NSCB Resolution No. 9
Series of 2003.)
9. II. Definition of Urban Areas in the Philippines
SRTC proposed the following urban criteria:
1. A city/municipality is to be considered as urban in its entirety if it has
a population; density of at least 4,000 (The National Capital Region is
considered as entirely urban); and
2. A barangay in a city or municipality not classified as urban in the first
criterion is to be considered as urban if it has a population of at least
7,000 or it is a población or central district of a city or provincial
capital.
10. II. Definition of Urban Areas in the Philippines
TCPHS reviewed the 1995. Proposed redefinition to ensure
consistency, applicability and acceptability of the criteria.
1. If a barangay has a population size of 5,000 or more, then a
barangay is considered urban, or
2. If a barangay has at least one establishment with a minimum of 100
employees, a barangay is considered urban, or

3. If a barangay has 5 or more establishments with a minimum of 10
employees, and 5 or more facilities within the two-kilometer radius from
the barangay hall, then a barangay is considered urban.
