For the young humans brought
into the world, with their skin the color
of deep blue – cold and innocent,
how does the great knowledgeable
doctors bring this little men into life?
They would spank the buttocks of the
child, allowing them to feel the pang
and let the babies shout out a cry, a
cry symbolizing that they are alive. It is
a brilliant analogy of us to waking up
from a deep slumber of sin. But is this
how we really want to realize things; to
feel pain before we truly comprehend
that we are to be brought into
something more beautiful than just our
eyes closed? Think again. Page 2

Dear RelEd101,
Well? I don’t know how to
start this but definitely the number
one thing I could say is ‘Thank you’.
Thank you because you
helped me understand the basic of
the basics. Thank you for welcoming
me here in St. Paul University with
your arms wide open like that of the
Chapel being in the center of the
school. I have learned a lot from
you, and I hope that Page 18

in the Holy Rosary. Our religion teachers too, taught us on the cardinal sins, on how to
properly say the prayer before confessing, how to confess and the do’s and don’ts before
confession. One don’t that I have been practicing up until now is that you shall never
share your confession to anyone. Growing up, without no more religion teachers to guide
us – I had my family on hand teaching and molding me in a way that will please Him. But
no, I haven’t really understood what the Bible is, what’s in the bible and what the bible
really is for.
And this is where the RelEd101 comes in. Religion Education, if you missed it –St. Paul
University will compensate it for you. Aside from the story behind the school itself, the Bible
was more interesting for me. I understood every detail of the each story. Of why, of what
and of what little details they put together creating one huge, long story that impacts the
whole life and thinking of the Christians. It deals with the reason and truths behind each
story, it also reveals the salvific truths that shall be implied in our lives to be able to reach
Him. Religion education is something necessary for us, not just for the students – but for
everyone, of every age. It will affect your outlook on life, like it did for us. Temporary it may
seem, but I trust that in my four-year long stay in this school, I will gladly understand His
teachings, His words and spread it as it was promised to Him.
Religion education aims to give the basics that are in fact important in the
foundation of one’s knowledge of his Christianity. It’ll help us grow like that of a mighty
tree, roots expanding and it’s clasp strong in the soil. We are the tree and the Good Lord
is the soil. We grow with his hands wrapped around us and our balance clinging unto him
to keep us steady.

What is Religion Education?

Roman Catholic Education is
practiced through elementary years
– private or public. Children, like us
back in the days are provided with
religion teachers that are serving the
Holy Catholic Church. Aside from our
parents teaching us how to pray, the
religion teachers taught us with the
different basic prayers like The
Apostle’s Creed and the Hail Holy
Queen prayer that are used
Religion education already gave us an enlightenment and prolific knowledge of our
very own beliefs that are still vague for the people of the Roman Catholics. It helped us
understand things better, that things should be made for it was called for it and it
shouldn’t just because. We realize then that the world can be truly cruel and everything is
just a test. A little sorrow is nothing compared to the sensation we will feel when we shall
meet Him. And this became our spiritual guide and daily mantra to be in such form that
we are presentable, insightful and understanding in our daily lives.
relate to the faithful people of God, who would never get tired of thanking and believing
in Him, no matter how hard are the trials that He is giving, and that I would always beg
for His forgiveness every time I hurt and disobeyed Him. During our lectures, I’d often find
myself guilty being reminded on how much I have neglected my duties as His daughter
when He never get tired being my father, how I’d taken Him for granted when I need Him
the most, and not being able to be there for Him when He needed me. I’m really glad I
was able to take this subject because if I didn’t, a part of me will remain incomplete,
ignorant of the lessons I’ve never learned until now.
The hardest lesson in RelEd for me is on the lectures about values and morals.

“ The lesson that I liked the
most is about the entire book of
Exodus. In this book, we can see
how the Israelites believed, obeyed,
struggled, sinned and came back
to God. I liked this part the most
because I can see myself on the

And easily tempted I am towards

It’s easy to understand but hard to apply in real life. Learning takes place first
at home. Culture, traditions, expectations and environment plays a vital role for the
growth of a human person. That’s why it’s quite confusing sometimes when you ask
yourself which side are you going with since there are times when some of its teachings
are contradicting each other. Following God has never been easy, said by a priest in his
homily since it means leaving everything behind and sacrificing for the people in need
and for Him. And I really find this a challenge. Though I know I’ll never be able to do it
perfectly right away, I believe He will appreciate me and my efforts even if it’s just little by
little. “

“ New chapter of life as they call it, ‘you’ll stand out’ they say but never did they
realize the small things that affect a student. New environment, new teachers, new
friends, new set of people – these are the factors to expect when entering into college. A
wide variation of faces, personalities and a lot of intimidation happening in the new
atmosphere, how did I surpass it?
In Religion Education 101, I was really nervous. I thought it would be the old ways in
which you should memorize by heart the Gospel and the Homily of the last Sunday mass
that shall be recited on the day of your meeting. I am someone who hears the mass, yet I
only remember the lines and my grandmother used to say that the nuns would be our
teachers and they will be meticulous about the answers. I was relieved when I saw a lady
get inside our classroom, long haired, fair skinned – no she wasn’t wearing any veil nor did
she have a dress inches long below her knee. Rather, she was in a pair of clothes that are
seems familiar to me – uniform of a teacher. First meeting it was, I was still agitated by the
thought that any moment from now she would ask the Homily yet she didn’t. She
introduced herself and carefully, softly, and nicely she tackled about her lecture. Second
meeting, the tense was still there until I got used to it and knew by myself that this isn’t like
before.
I was impressed both to myself and to my teacher, because honestly Religion
Education is commonly dropped by most of the students. In this subject, I was listening all
ears. They introduced us to the different parts of school. The remarkable Our Lady of
Chartes Chapel, a replica of that of in France. The jaw-dropping complex and
sophisticated windows, holding more than just a photo but a story in which we’ve learned
a lot. One of the best sets of lancet I’d love to stare is that of depicting the seven corporal
works of mercy, it is in which I reflect most of the time. Am I doing any single thing from
these seven works? Funny, isn’t it? Words are so easy to say, to write, to create – their
malleability giving us the power to say things that we both don’t mean and mean. It’s a
good thing that Religion Education somehow helps us come out from our shell and be
someone who’s sensitive around our surroundings.
After the virtual tour inside the chapel and the history of the school, the stories in the
4
Bible next came in. My favorite story was Abraham’s. It was a long journey through his life
and his faith to the Lord never ended. The test in which he was tasked to sacrifice his son,
he still wanted to do it. This is something I always look up to. Our teacher told us that no,
Biblical stories never did happen but it gives us truths that are relative to our salvation. I
always imagine myself in Abraham’s shoe – what if I was tasked by God to sacrifice my
mother, with all my faith in Him, shall I do it? It’s really hard to see things from the bible
and reflect it within myself, only then I remember that it’s the revelation behind the story
that is what I need to engulf in my whole being. Doubting him is a grave sin, our teacher
said but sometimes I can’t help myself to. I always find myself in situations that I think
would never happen to me and I keep asking Him why. Only then, I see answers within
myself, that truly He does things on His own ways.
One of the hardest lessons to get through was the Ark of the Covenant. No, not
because I didn’t get it. It’s because I am not determined enough to apply the Ten
Commandments in my life. There are a lot of temptations around, little lies to get away
from trouble, an instant look on someone’s paper, a slight sip of the wine that we
shouldn’t, peer pressure; I can’t blame my age nor my generation neither the people
surrounding me, I know it’s in me and my drive if I shall get away with it or just go on.
People are dynamic, I am dynamic – ever changing time to time and I wish, no, I will try
to push myself and practice His words.
And this is what I have learned and still learning through the years of religion
education. I surpassed the new atmosphere with the help of the lady in front of us, all
heart she gives us when she is speaking His words and I guess it is essential for one’s
learning experience; acquire a teacher who truly knows and is passionate to share His
words. “

“We live in world full of advancements, innovations that surpassed the human
knowledge. Did you ever wonder about what it’s like to live in a world where the internet,
cell phones, computers and electricity did not exist, where innocence is shared and is in
itself reputable?
REL 101 had so many to do with morals and truths. The bible, for example has verses
that are full of intriguing wisdom and metaphors that seem so unfathomable! Take
Chapter 19, the story of Lot and His Daughters. Innocence is somehow manifested. After
the Destruction at Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot and his daughters hid in a cave after
having escaped the place and they saw that there were no other people around left
and it dawned on them that in their situation they would not be able to preserve their
lineage. And so the daughters slept with their father and became pregnant with their
father’s sons. The older daughter had a son named Moab and the younger, named Ben-
Ammi.
Their only concern was not being able to preserve their lineage and the solution
5
that the daughters thought of, in our generation, would be considered an
atypical, maybe even immoral thing to do but in that separate nonexistent world
anymore, it is in fact a practical thing to do. The story was written in such an honest way
that the more you understand it, you don’t question its innocence and abnormality
anymore.
Innocence today is such a feeble thing although for some it remains intact. And if
there’s one truth I learned in REL 101, it’s that this kind of purity is now scarce in our time
and our search for it may be hindered by so many of our time’s novelty, Innocence still
somehow exists and it is our own way of perceiving it that we achieve openness. “

How do you change the world? Where do we even begin? These questions have
been burning in my mind since the day my eyes were opened to the terrible happenings
around us. I see the poor and homeless littered around the streets, I see rainforests slowly
disappear, I see animals with fear in their eyes running from those who were to care for
them. And I begin to wonder, ‘how can we help? How do I ask God for the answers to
change everything?’
My questions were soon answered the day I entered my RelEd class in my first year
of college. At first, all I thought was we would sit in class, and just read away in the Bible. A
bit of my assumptions were correct, but what I didn’t expect were the things I would learn
from these “stories”. These lessons from these stories were not easy to learn. I could tell
from the looks of everyone in class. But, they listened intently nonetheless. Someone,
mainly our teacher, would relay the bible story up-front, and the teacher would give us a
life lesson, so we would understand and internalize what they meant by the story. Even
children would be intrigued by these lessons. This practice continued for the next few
months. It was the same thing every meeting. Bible story, life lesson, quizzes. But no, this
wasn’t what answered my questions. It was the activity we were to do one weekend. It
was the long-awaited tree planting activity. The entire class was ecstatic. Come
Saturday, the event was canceled. I was disappointed. I wanted to go. I even thought of
sneaking off, and going to the venue, but no, I didn’t. Instead, Mrs. Pico, our teacher,
asked for us to clean the campus chapel. We happily obliged, although some others
grumbled away. I’m not exactly sure why we were to do these things, but I knew it was for
a good cause.
When I learned that we are to clean the famous Our Lady of Chartes
Chapel, a replica of that in France, I was glad. I was glad because, for once, I did
something not to please the public, but to please God. I did something that would not
help only me, but everyone. Even if it’s just a little bit. Even if it’s unnoticed by most. I did
something that could start even just a small bit of change in the world.
Back then, I never understood what a small act of help would do to change everything. I
never understood how a small act of comfort and care would make any difference in
the world. I did, but just a teensy bit. Now I understand it fully. You don’t need to give
gigantic amounts of money to the poor and homeless and be put in public. You don’t
have to “plant” trees in a public campaign, just to have them cut down in the next 20
years. You don’t have to announce that you are helping a specific poor kid in his
education. You don’t have to start there. Even the tiniest acts of kindness and care may
count. But that doesn’t mean you have to stop there, either. Confused? Don’t worry.
You’ll see what I mean, in time. Just remember, if you want to change the world, start
with “an act of random kindness at a time… (-Morgan Freeman; Evan Almighty)”

of Fatima building (high school) and the third entrance stands facing the Father Louis
Chauvet (FLC) Building.
There are also three kinds of windows: the Rose, wherein there are only three and are
placed above each entrance and are joined to the shape of a circle. The Lancet
windows, lie below or beside each rose window and are formed like that of a sword. The
Clerestory windows, rest at the sides of each corner of the chapel to serve as vents for air
to come in. The beauty in these windows exists not only because of their tinted glass, but
also because within them, there dwell stories, meaning and representations.

The Sisters of St. Paul Chartres
Chapel is a glory that cannot be
contained. A step inside this
magnificent sanctum leads to
succeeding others, leaving you in
awe of its confines. Shall we go on a
“printed tour”?
In the occasion that you step
inside a church or a chapel, do you
notice at once the windows that
surround their confines? The stained
glass gives the whole structure a
divine feel and the University Chapel
bequeaths more than that; its stained
glass windows have stories within
stories and implications that provide
deeper understanding of what we
should be.
There are three entrances to
the Chapel; the facade which looks
towards the university’s vehicular
gate, another faces the Our Lady
The facade’s rose window contains Jesus Christ as the Judge surrounded by
angels and the Elders of the apocalypse. Its outer rings depict the symbols of resurrection
and life; death and judgment; and heaven and paradise. The lancet windows below it
hold the three; The Last Judgment (Left), The Incarnation of Christ (Center) and Paschal
Mystery (Right). The rose window facing north, the Our Lady of Fatima building,
comprises the 24 elders surrounding Jesus Christ at the center and below it the lancet
windows contain the images of Mother Mary and baby Jesus and to their left are that of
prophets and to their right are the images of evangelists. Lancet windows on the right of
the north entrance however, comprise the story of how the Sisters of St. Paul Chartres
came to be and on the left of the north entrance are the angels Gabriel, the protector,
Michael, the messenger, and Raphael, the healer. The south rose window faces the
Father Louis Chauvet (FLC) building and is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the
lancet windows found beneath it are images of the kings of Judah, Fleur-de-lis which is
the emblem of the French and Sancta Anna, the mother of Mother Mary. At the right are
the Corporal Works of Mercy and the three Theological Virtues and on the left side of the
southern entrance is the story of St. Paul’s conversion.
The chapel holds a great measure of meaning and this ‘printed tour’ is merely a
guide. Hopefully, your first step inside this renowned chapel will be one memory that you
will always recollect.
! Reflection in Stewardship
Yuka Kumazawa
They say you always have to dig deeper to
find out what’s beneath everything. And this is the
importance of RelEd101. It is to let the students know
the roots of everything.
Everything is a tree; faith is our roots. We have
to take care of the roots for the tree to continue its
life. And this is the main goal of RelEd101, to let our
faiths be strong so we can live fruitfully in life.
In RelEd101, we can say our faith deepened
even if it’s just for one bit. We’ve learned to be
responsible not only in our studies but also in the
9
the community. We can consider this subject as the most life changing of all subjects given
to us because it brought us a step closer to God.

Bahay Dasalan: Oplan Linis!
Walis dito, walis diyan, punas dito, punas diyan, hakot dito, hakot diyan, ayos dito, ayos
diyan, pagpag dito, pagpag diyan.
malalapit kong kaibigan nagsipaglinis.
Wala namang taong gugustuhin o
nanaising magkaroon ng napakaruming
bahay dasalan hindi ba? Lahat ng tao ay
gusto ng mayumi, maaliwalas at hindi
nakakaasiwang simbahan na mayroong
masarap na simoy ng hangin at payapang
paligid.
Laging
tatandaan na kinakailangan parin nating
panatilihing maganda at kawili-wili ang
paligid sa anumang paraan nang
maisaayos natin ang dating yumi at ganda
ng gawa ng ating Panginoon at upang
manatiling sagrado ang kanyang binuong
tahanan.

someone who is capable of earning my own money by doing little works or just by saving
through my daily allowance – I help the unfortunate ones by giving them food. A little gift it
is, but I know it is a huge idea for them.
Now being a college student, studying in this prestigious school – St. Paul University
Philippines, it is already embedded in the name that everyone shall be practicing
stewardship. While the school is giving us our needs and provides us the helping Ate and
Kuya cleaning our hallways, bathrooms and the chapel, it does not mean that we are not
to dirty our hands to touch a broom, groom the plants or dust the chairs. And in our ways,
we did help them by cleaning the chapel. We cleaned the staircase, every step surely no
dust is left. The chairs are meticulously wiped. This is us. We were all tired, from the swimming
class, two of us had our period and dysmenorrhea is attacking but it didn’t stop us.
I, being someone who is studying in a private school provided with all the janitors and
janitress, they are not considered a hindrance for me to stop helping in the tiniest way I
can. Helping them through paying doesn’t end there.
Even if cleaning the chapel would mean a higher grade for me, I wouldn’t let it be
just that. I would serve the school, without anything to be exchanged. I would serve Him
without anything in return.
Stewardship for me is an experience. It is something that you do willingly that even if
doing it over and over again, it doesn’t feel like so. It is the passion to do something great.
And it is in the heart and soul of a single being whether or not to carry on the number one
task He gave us; to serve Him, to be a model of everyone – to be a steward of this land He
lend us.

Innate Duty of a Man
Defining what stewardship
is, it is the responsibility to take
care of a certain task. Such
meaning is easy to say but in
reality, responsibility is a heavy-
weight object that cannot be
carried by everyone. While
youngsters are the people who
are having difficulties implying
stewardship, there are little ways in
which we could help by our own.

	 Being a seventeen-year-old,
to the whole world. Just like any other parent who would do anything for their child,
straining their backs and sweating in a million droplets is not a big deal for them. That’s
why children do little things in return for their parents when they got home from work like
kiss them or offer them something to eat and drink after a very long day, and other acts
of thoughtfulness. The same is true when it comes to our invisible God. Since we can’t see
our Father with our naked eyes, we can do our part as His children in many ways- being
obedient to our human parents, worshipping Him, helping the weak, giving to the needy,
or even taking care of His creations.
Last 18th of November 2015, we were asked to clean the Our Lady of Chartes Chapel.
Being inside the chapel never failed to amaze me both on how the colored windows are
being reflected inside by the sunlight, and also by the stories behind those. As we swept
the floor and wiped the chairs, I saw how much dirt had accumulated inside from the
people who went there to pray. I realized that no matter how beautiful something is, if it’s
not being maintained the way it is supposed to be, then it will be so much of a waste and
will end up useless; same is true with our environment. We can benefit a lot from our
surroundings, yet we tend to be abusive and leave them be after being benefitted, as if it
doesn’t have anything to do with us anymore and not wanting to take responsible of the
mess we made. See, if non-living things can talk, they would’ve not let us sleep; they
might not stop nagging us, reminding us that we left them dirty and miserable. In our
house, I would often scold my younger brother for always leaving his trash everywhere in
our house when honestly speaking, I care so little about my surroundings when I’m
outside. Being reminded of how alerting the climate is changing and how our world is
warming in an abnormal way, I’ve learned to change some of my ways; for example if
ever I have trash and there is no garbage bin nearby, I would keep it on my bag for the
mean time and things like that. Every time I watch the news, I feel concerned for the
people that lives on places that experience massive flooding; “If we just planted lots of
trees and stop practicing the kaingin system, then perhaps people won’t die and a lot of
ways of living won’t be washed out.”, “If we just lessen the production of plastics and

Our Purpose: It Comes With Caring
There is one question that is the pinnacle of all others that seems unanswerable,
otherwise too profound that one cannot discern all the answers to it. “What is my purpose
for existing?” It is gratifying to already know what is yours, isn’t it? To be in the heart of your
purpose comes with knowing who had created you, who made you exist and why He did.
We were brought into this world ready to adapt to it. We exist in order to co-exist with
others and the environment, made to become interconnected parts of a whole. He made
us capable to do things with free will and intellect, but somehow we have abused this
freedom and gave more importance on what can bring us pleasure and comfort.
We now live in a world full of desires that do nothing but consume. We start to wonder
about how we all truly survive. Suddenly, it’s not the question “Is our presence significant to
the world?” that is vital, but the other way around, “Does the world even like our
presence?”
In the past century our home has taken great leaps in science and technology, it is no
wonder that we’ve grown dependent on both. We’ve struggled to achieve great heights
in making our lives more comfortable, not stopping to think about what this does to where
we are now.
Somehow, awareness rapidly spreads as there are many avenues to publish one’s
opinion, cry or protest. And among these gave rise to the awareness of environment.
Pope Francis’ second encyclical, Laudato Si (Praise be to You) wherein its title is an
Umbrian phrase from St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun, tackles the different avenues
of man and society’s well-being, their development, how far they’ve gone and how they
have affected earth, our home. These are environmentalism, poverty, science and
modernism, and technology. In his second encyclical, the pontiff critiques consumerism,
and irresponsible development, laments environmental degradation and global warming,
and calls all people of the world to take “swift and unified global action.” It is within our
purpose of existing that we do everything in our ability to make sure we do our part in
healing our wounded home.
13
We are God’s stewards of His creation. We were given the freedom and intellect,
using it to the best and appropriate way that we can is what we should do. We do not
exist for ourselves and for our own benefit but for others and especially for our home. So
we do our part, to preserve what is left and save what is dying.
The idea was to be familiarized with the books in the Bible. The group adopted
the song Banjo by Rascal Flatts.

Isa isang inaaral, dahan dahang iniintindi,

Basura’y ating pulutin at huwag padamihin,
16
! Literature Form of Reflection
Arts and Poems

Odyssey of Men
For me, this is one of best and striking lines I have ever learned from the
bible. It helps me cope with the true world, it’s harsh yet beautiful ways, that it is a
journey we shall enjoy and cherish. It helps me realize that everything is only temporary.
That something is still going to end. Whether it is happiness or pain, a sentimental object
and/or a loved one. It’ll come to a stop, a sudden jolt of ache to make us realize that
nothing shall be forever until we return to Him, from the land, into the land and with our
ashes we’ll come back to Him.

Tell me what it is
That you know
And
What you
want to know
About out home that is
In a state
Of
Advancement and
Deterioration
Do you see all the
Beauty that is
Around
You? Or
Are you
Trapped in a world where
All that you
See
Rots and
Consumes?
What do you know about
The reality of
What
We do
And are doing?
... from what I have learned from you – I can apply it to my life.
Yes, I’m sorry I haven’t understood some of the lessons. I miss some of it. The
labyrinth and the Plaza de Martinez but I’m catching up with my schoolmates who
18
The reality that all we
Do is consume
And
Destroy all
For our own pleasure
It starts with us they
Say, but it
Also
Ends with
Us, the ones who damage
Is this true? Or are
There people out
There
Who still
Care for what is truly
Important, the things that matter
Most for our
Good
And our home’s
Welfare?
Show yourselves, and do what
You can to
Save
What is
Still left of the ruin
If all else must perish,
There is hope
When
All that
Is left are the effects,
Hope an our cause will
Prevail and conquer,
We
Will change,
And see the good
Within ourselves, we will finally
See the light
Of
Our home
That was always kind.
! A Goodbye Letter to RelEd101
Jade de Guzman
are old Paulinians. Nevertheless, I understood the book of Genesis! I loved Abraham’s
faith to the Lord, imagine, he almost sacrificed his son! What a test that was. I liked it
when the teacher told your stories, chapter by chapter, detail by detail. I understood it
better. I can’t help but to think, the people who wrote the bible, how wise were they?
For every cloth, jewelry and event it has a meaning! I wonder if it’s still practiced today. I
also memorized the books because we were once assigned to make a song out of it, to
be familiarized with the books.
Exodus was cool too! How come you can retell these kind of stories and never
missing out the little details? The Pharaoh was abusive, wasn’t he? The plagues, tsk tsk.
He only released the people after the tenth! I always imagine it in my head, the angel of
death, maybe in a black form with its wings as dark as the nightfall, billowing black
smoke, passing by the rock houses with the blood of the chicken by the door. How
terrifying would that be? I also witnessed in this book the true colors of a human. I mean,
look! Moses gave them everything when the people were given the freedom but all they
did was to complain! I am guilty of it, sometimes. But I wish people would somehow erase
this kind of trait from their whole being, no?
The judges, oh how foolish of Samson right? I wish I won’t be like him someday. I
shall know my limits and that my secrets shall stay with me and only be revealed to my
future one. The Kings on the other hand, I also enjoyed it! But I can’t seem to like anyone
other than King David because he was still favored by God after mourning for his sin and
He gave another son to him. I wish I could be like that. Without pride I would
acknowledge my sin. Hmm, you seem bored now reading my letter. It’ll end, no worries!
A little bit of 2 pages and you’ll say bye-bye too! Ha ha ha!
Oh wait, I almost forgot, there were the prophets! The one who saw the coming of
Christ. Who was it again? Jeremiah? Hosea? They all sound the same! No, not Ezekiel.. Is
it Isaiah? Yes! Him! Can I also be granted of that power? To see the future? How famous
will I be, no? How many people would come after me, asking about their future. But I
wouldn’t think I’d like it, ‘cause you see, I like spontaneity. Would you like to know when
you would get married? Have kids? Or even when will be the specific date of your
death? Naahhh. I’ll probably stick to praying, I know He’ll listen to me and guide me,
right? That’s what you taught us!
I was challenged with your prayers! My schoolmates who studied in this school past
few years had no fuss of memorizing the school’s prayer anymore! I had a hard time. He
he, but it was fine. I felt I belong when I’m praying the same words with them.
I think it’s not 2 pages, I’ll end it now.
Thank you, RelEd101! I promise, I will carry all these lectures you’ve taught us! I’ll try not
to embarrass you when I’ll go to RelED102. Of course, I’ll get intimidated again but at
least I have the knowledge, right? Have fun teaching the incoming freshmen soon! Or
maybe the ones who have dropped your subject, I think they haven’t realize yet that
19
you’re also fun. No worries, I will share your words to everyone, not just in school, until my
home and until I see duplicate little versions of me.
I hope not to be with you again! Ha ha! I want to keep moving forward, and going
back to you means I failed! But no, I trust myself. I think I passed you, right? You’re not
easy but you’re tricky, especially during exams. I will miss my novice mind playing around
with you. God bless us both!
Sincerely,
A learning Man
“ We thank you Mrs. Jessievic Pico for giving
us the opportunity and trusting us to make a
special project that enhanced our skills and
quality time together as a group. May this

a remarkable teacher! God bless you! ”

  • 1. For the young humans brought into the world, with their skin the color of deep blue – cold and innocent, how does the great knowledgeable doctors bring this little men into life? They would spank the buttocks of the child, allowing them to feel the pang and let the babies shout out a cry, a cry symbolizing that they are alive. It is a brilliant analogy of us to waking up from a deep slumber of sin. But is this how we really want to realize things; to feel pain before we truly comprehend that we are to be brought into something more beautiful than just our eyes closed? Think again. Page 2 L a d i e s ! P a t r o l December 2015Tuguegarao City, Cagayan Dear RelEd101, Well? I don’t know how to start this but definitely the number one thing I could say is ‘Thank you’. Thank you because you helped me understand the basic of the basics. Thank you for welcoming me here in St. Paul University with your arms wide open like that of the Chapel being in the center of the school. I have learned a lot from you, and I hope that Page 18 “For me, this is one of best and striking lines I have ever learned from the bible. • 2. in the Holy Rosary. Our religion teachers too, taught us on the cardinal sins, on how to properly say the prayer before confessing, how to confess and the do’s and don’ts before confession. One don’t that I have been practicing up until now is that you shall never share your confession to anyone. Growing up, without no more religion teachers to guide us – I had my family on hand teaching and molding me in a way that will please Him. But no, I haven’t really understood what the Bible is, what’s in the bible and what the bible really is for. And this is where the RelEd101 comes in. Religion Education, if you missed it –St. Paul University will compensate it for you. Aside from the story behind the school itself, the Bible was more interesting for me. I understood every detail of the each story. Of why, of what and of what little details they put together creating one huge, long story that impacts the whole life and thinking of the Christians. It deals with the reason and truths behind each story, it also reveals the salvific truths that shall be implied in our lives to be able to reach Him. Religion education is something necessary for us, not just for the students – but for everyone, of every age. It will affect your outlook on life, like it did for us. Temporary it may seem, but I trust that in my four-year long stay in this school, I will gladly understand His teachings, His words and spread it as it was promised to Him. Religion education aims to give the basics that are in fact important in the foundation of one’s knowledge of his Christianity. It’ll help us grow like that of a mighty tree, roots expanding and it’s clasp strong in the soil. We are the tree and the Good Lord is the soil. We grow with his hands wrapped around us and our balance clinging unto him to keep us steady. 2 What is Religion Education? ! Jade de Guzman Bibleandaprayeronapaper Roman Catholic Education is practiced through elementary years – private or public. Children, like us back in the days are provided with religion teachers that are serving the Holy Catholic Church. Aside from our parents teaching us how to pray, the religion teachers taught us with the different basic prayers like The Apostle’s Creed and the Hail Holy Queen prayer that are used
  • 3. Religion education already gave us an enlightenment and prolific knowledge of our very own beliefs that are still vague for the people of the Roman Catholics. It helped us understand things better, that things should be made for it was called for it and it shouldn’t just because. We realize then that the world can be truly cruel and everything is just a test. A little sorrow is nothing compared to the sensation we will feel when we shall meet Him. And this became our spiritual guide and daily mantra to be in such form that we are presentable, insightful and understanding in our daily lives. relate to the faithful people of God, who would never get tired of thanking and believing in Him, no matter how hard are the trials that He is giving, and that I would always beg for His forgiveness every time I hurt and disobeyed Him. During our lectures, I’d often find myself guilty being reminded on how much I have neglected my duties as His daughter when He never get tired being my father, how I’d taken Him for granted when I need Him the most, and not being able to be there for Him when He needed me. I’m really glad I was able to take this subject because if I didn’t, a part of me will remain incomplete, ignorant of the lessons I’ve never learned until now. The hardest lesson in RelEd for me is on the lectures about values and morals. 3 ! Classroom Settings: What’s your favorite? Jenica Bea “ The lesson that I liked the most is about the entire book of Exodus. In this book, we can see how the Israelites believed, obeyed, struggled, sinned and came back to God. I liked this part the most because I can see myself on the characters – how vulnerable, weak, And easily tempted I am towards sin. But among all these, I can also
  • 4. It’s easy to understand but hard to apply in real life. Learning takes place first at home. Culture, traditions, expectations and environment plays a vital role for the growth of a human person. That’s why it’s quite confusing sometimes when you ask yourself which side are you going with since there are times when some of its teachings are contradicting each other. Following God has never been easy, said by a priest in his homily since it means leaving everything behind and sacrificing for the people in need and for Him. And I really find this a challenge. Though I know I’ll never be able to do it perfectly right away, I believe He will appreciate me and my efforts even if it’s just little by little. “ Jade de Guzman “ New chapter of life as they call it, ‘you’ll stand out’ they say but never did they realize the small things that affect a student. New environment, new teachers, new friends, new set of people – these are the factors to expect when entering into college. A wide variation of faces, personalities and a lot of intimidation happening in the new atmosphere, how did I surpass it? In Religion Education 101, I was really nervous. I thought it would be the old ways in which you should memorize by heart the Gospel and the Homily of the last Sunday mass that shall be recited on the day of your meeting. I am someone who hears the mass, yet I only remember the lines and my grandmother used to say that the nuns would be our teachers and they will be meticulous about the answers. I was relieved when I saw a lady get inside our classroom, long haired, fair skinned – no she wasn’t wearing any veil nor did she have a dress inches long below her knee. Rather, she was in a pair of clothes that are seems familiar to me – uniform of a teacher. First meeting it was, I was still agitated by the thought that any moment from now she would ask the Homily yet she didn’t. She introduced herself and carefully, softly, and nicely she tackled about her lecture. Second meeting, the tense was still there until I got used to it and knew by myself that this isn’t like before. I was impressed both to myself and to my teacher, because honestly Religion Education is commonly dropped by most of the students. In this subject, I was listening all ears. They introduced us to the different parts of school. The remarkable Our Lady of Chartes Chapel, a replica of that of in France. The jaw-dropping complex and sophisticated windows, holding more than just a photo but a story in which we’ve learned a lot. One of the best sets of lancet I’d love to stare is that of depicting the seven corporal works of mercy, it is in which I reflect most of the time. Am I doing any single thing from these seven works? Funny, isn’t it? Words are so easy to say, to write, to create – their malleability giving us the power to say things that we both don’t mean and mean. It’s a good thing that Religion Education somehow helps us come out from our shell and be someone who’s sensitive around our surroundings. After the virtual tour inside the chapel and the history of the school, the stories in the 4
  • 5. Bible next came in. My favorite story was Abraham’s. It was a long journey through his life and his faith to the Lord never ended. The test in which he was tasked to sacrifice his son, he still wanted to do it. This is something I always look up to. Our teacher told us that no, Biblical stories never did happen but it gives us truths that are relative to our salvation. I always imagine myself in Abraham’s shoe – what if I was tasked by God to sacrifice my mother, with all my faith in Him, shall I do it? It’s really hard to see things from the bible and reflect it within myself, only then I remember that it’s the revelation behind the story that is what I need to engulf in my whole being. Doubting him is a grave sin, our teacher said but sometimes I can’t help myself to. I always find myself in situations that I think would never happen to me and I keep asking Him why. Only then, I see answers within myself, that truly He does things on His own ways. One of the hardest lessons to get through was the Ark of the Covenant. No, not because I didn’t get it. It’s because I am not determined enough to apply the Ten Commandments in my life. There are a lot of temptations around, little lies to get away from trouble, an instant look on someone’s paper, a slight sip of the wine that we shouldn’t, peer pressure; I can’t blame my age nor my generation neither the people surrounding me, I know it’s in me and my drive if I shall get away with it or just go on. People are dynamic, I am dynamic – ever changing time to time and I wish, no, I will try to push myself and practice His words. And this is what I have learned and still learning through the years of religion education. I surpassed the new atmosphere with the help of the lady in front of us, all heart she gives us when she is speaking His words and I guess it is essential for one’s learning experience; acquire a teacher who truly knows and is passionate to share His words. “ Francesca Lingan “We live in world full of advancements, innovations that surpassed the human knowledge. Did you ever wonder about what it’s like to live in a world where the internet, cell phones, computers and electricity did not exist, where innocence is shared and is in itself reputable? REL 101 had so many to do with morals and truths. The bible, for example has verses that are full of intriguing wisdom and metaphors that seem so unfathomable! Take Chapter 19, the story of Lot and His Daughters. Innocence is somehow manifested. After the Destruction at Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot and his daughters hid in a cave after having escaped the place and they saw that there were no other people around left and it dawned on them that in their situation they would not be able to preserve their lineage. And so the daughters slept with their father and became pregnant with their father’s sons. The older daughter had a son named Moab and the younger, named Ben- Ammi. Their only concern was not being able to preserve their lineage and the solution 5
  • 6. that the daughters thought of, in our generation, would be considered an atypical, maybe even immoral thing to do but in that separate nonexistent world anymore, it is in fact a practical thing to do. The story was written in such an honest way that the more you understand it, you don’t question its innocence and abnormality anymore. Innocence today is such a feeble thing although for some it remains intact. And if there’s one truth I learned in REL 101, it’s that this kind of purity is now scarce in our time and our search for it may be hindered by so many of our time’s novelty, Innocence still somehow exists and it is our own way of perceiving it that we achieve openness.
  • 7. Yda Quinan How do you change the world? Where do we even begin? These questions have been burning in my mind since the day my eyes were opened to the terrible happenings around us. I see the poor and homeless littered around the streets, I see rainforests slowly disappear, I see animals with fear in their eyes running from those who were to care for them. And I begin to wonder, ‘how can we help? How do I ask God for the answers to change everything?’ My questions were soon answered the day I entered my RelEd class in my first year of college. At first, all I thought was we would sit in class, and just read away in the Bible. A bit of my assumptions were correct, but what I didn’t expect were the things I would learn from these “stories”. These lessons from these stories were not easy to learn. I could tell from the looks of everyone in class. But, they listened intently nonetheless. Someone, mainly our teacher, would relay the bible story up-front, and the teacher would give us a life lesson, so we would understand and internalize what they meant by the story. Even children would be intrigued by these lessons. This practice continued for the next few months. It was the same thing every meeting. Bible story, life lesson, quizzes. But no, this wasn’t what answered my questions. It was the activity we were to do one weekend. It was the long-awaited tree planting activity. The entire class was ecstatic. Come Saturday, the event was canceled. I was disappointed. I wanted to go. I even thought of sneaking off, and going to the venue, but no, I didn’t. Instead, Mrs. Pico, our teacher, asked for us to clean the campus chapel. We happily obliged, although some others grumbled away. I’m not exactly sure why we were to do these things, but I knew it was for a good cause. When I learned that we are to clean the famous Our Lady of Chartes Chapel, a replica of that in France, I was glad. I was glad because, for once, I did something not to please the public, but to please God. I did something that would not help only me, but everyone. Even if it’s just a little bit. Even if it’s unnoticed by most. I did something that could start even just a small bit of change in the world. Back then, I never understood what a small act of help would do to change everything. I never understood how a small act of comfort and care would make any difference in the world. I did, but just a teensy bit. Now I understand it fully. You don’t need to give gigantic amounts of money to the poor and homeless and be put in public. You don’t have to “plant” trees in a public campaign, just to have them cut down in the next 20 years. You don’t have to announce that you are helping a specific poor kid in his education. You don’t have to start there. Even the tiniest acts of kindness and care may count. But that doesn’t mean you have to stop there, either. Confused? Don’t worry. You’ll see what I mean, in time. Just remember, if you want to change the world, start with “an act of random kindness at a time… (-Morgan Freeman; Evan Almighty)” 7

A step inside this magnificent sanctum leads to succeeding others, leaving you in awe of its confines. Shall we go on a “printed tour”? In the occasion that you step inside a church or a chapel, do you notice at once the windows that surround their confines? The stained glass gives the whole structure a divine feel and the University Chapel bequeaths more than that; its stained glass windows have stories within stories and implications that provide deeper understanding of what we should be. There are three entrances to the Chapel; the facade which looks towards the university’s vehicular gate, another faces the Our Lady

Its outer rings depict the symbols of resurrection and life; death and judgment; and heaven and paradise. The lancet windows below it hold the three; The Last Judgment (Left), The Incarnation of Christ (Center) and Paschal Mystery (Right). The rose window facing north, the Our Lady of Fatima building, comprises the 24 elders surrounding Jesus Christ at the center and below it the lancet windows contain the images of Mother Mary and baby Jesus and to their left are that of prophets and to their right are the images of evangelists. Lancet windows on the right of the north entrance however, comprise the story of how the Sisters of St. Paul Chartres came to be and on the left of the north entrance are the angels Gabriel, the protector, Michael, the messenger, and Raphael, the healer. The south rose window faces the Father Louis Chauvet (FLC) building and is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the lancet windows found beneath it are images of the kings of Judah, Fleur-de-lis which is the emblem of the French and Sancta Anna, the mother of Mother Mary. At the right are the Corporal Works of Mercy and the three Theological Virtues and on the left side of the southern entrance is the story of St. Paul’s conversion. The chapel holds a great measure of meaning and this ‘printed tour’ is merely a guide. Hopefully, your first step inside this renowned chapel will be one memory that you will always recollect. ! Reflection in Stewardship Yuka Kumazawa They say you always have to dig deeper to find out what’s beneath everything. And this is the importance of RelEd101. It is to let the students know the roots of everything. Everything is a tree; faith is our roots. We have to take care of the roots for the tree to continue its life. And this is the main goal of RelEd101, to let our faiths be strong so we can live fruitfully in life. In RelEd101, we can say our faith deepened even if it’s just for one bit. We’ve learned to be responsible not only in our studies but also in the 9

A little gift it is, but I know it is a huge idea for them. Now being a college student, studying in this prestigious school – St. Paul University Philippines, it is already embedded in the name that everyone shall be practicing stewardship. While the school is giving us our needs and provides us the helping Ate and Kuya cleaning our hallways, bathrooms and the chapel, it does not mean that we are not to dirty our hands to touch a broom, groom the plants or dust the chairs. And in our ways, we did help them by cleaning the chapel. We cleaned the staircase, every step surely no dust is left. The chairs are meticulously wiped. This is us. We were all tired, from the swimming class, two of us had our period and dysmenorrhea is attacking but it didn’t stop us. I, being someone who is studying in a private school provided with all the janitors and janitress, they are not considered a hindrance for me to stop helping in the tiniest way I can. Helping them through paying doesn’t end there. Even if cleaning the chapel would mean a higher grade for me, I wouldn’t let it be just that. I would serve the school, without anything to be exchanged. I would serve Him without anything in return. Stewardship for me is an experience. It is something that you do willingly that even if doing it over and over again, it doesn’t feel like so. It is the passion to do something great. And it is in the heart and soul of a single being whether or not to carry on the number one task He gave us; to serve Him, to be a model of everyone – to be a steward of this land He lend us. 11 Jade de Guzman Innate Duty of a Man Defining what stewardship is, it is the responsibility to take care of a certain task. Such meaning is easy to say but in reality, responsibility is a heavy- weight object that cannot be carried by everyone. While youngsters are the people who are having difficulties implying stewardship, there are little ways in which we could help by our own. Being a seventeen-year-old,

That’s why children do little things in return for their parents when they got home from work like kiss them or offer them something to eat and drink after a very long day, and other acts of thoughtfulness. The same is true when it comes to our invisible God. Since we can’t see our Father with our naked eyes, we can do our part as His children in many ways- being obedient to our human parents, worshipping Him, helping the weak, giving to the needy, or even taking care of His creations. Last 18th of November 2015, we were asked to clean the Our Lady of Chartes Chapel. Being inside the chapel never failed to amaze me both on how the colored windows are being reflected inside by the sunlight, and also by the stories behind those. As we swept the floor and wiped the chairs, I saw how much dirt had accumulated inside from the people who went there to pray. I realized that no matter how beautiful something is, if it’s not being maintained the way it is supposed to be, then it will be so much of a waste and will end up useless; same is true with our environment. We can benefit a lot from our surroundings, yet we tend to be abusive and leave them be after being benefitted, as if it doesn’t have anything to do with us anymore and not wanting to take responsible of the mess we made. See, if non-living things can talk, they would’ve not let us sleep; they might not stop nagging us, reminding us that we left them dirty and miserable. In our house, I would often scold my younger brother for always leaving his trash everywhere in our house when honestly speaking, I care so little about my surroundings when I’m outside. Being reminded of how alerting the climate is changing and how our world is warming in an abnormal way, I’ve learned to change some of my ways; for example if ever I have trash and there is no garbage bin nearby, I would keep it on my bag for the mean time and things like that. Every time I watch the news, I feel concerned for the people that lives on places that experience massive flooding; “If we just planted lots of trees and stop practicing the kaingin system, then perhaps people won’t die and a lot of ways of living won’t be washed out.”, “If we just lessen the production of plastics and 12 Jenica Bea Guide to Human Responsibilities Before God made man, He made sure first of our necessities – light for us to be able to see with, air to breathe, water to quench our thirst with, land for us to live on, trees for shade, fruits to eat, animals to take care of, and a lot more. You may have heard this cliché for a million times now so before letting it out from your other ear, understand first not only what it means, but also what you can do about it, especially when it comes to our environment before God finally takes it away from us. Francesca Lingan Our Purpose: It Comes With Caring There is one question that is the pinnacle of all others that seems unanswerable, otherwise too profound that one cannot discern all the answers to it. “What is my purpose for existing?” It is gratifying to already know what is yours, isn’t it? To be in the heart of your purpose comes with knowing who had created you, who made you exist and why He did. We were brought into this world ready to adapt to it. We exist in order to co-exist with others and the environment, made to become interconnected parts of a whole. He made us capable to do things with free will and intellect, but somehow we have abused this freedom and gave more importance on what can bring us pleasure and comfort. We now live in a world full of desires that do nothing but consume. We start to wonder about how we all truly survive. Suddenly, it’s not the question “Is our presence significant to the world?” that is vital, but the other way around, “Does the world even like our presence?” In the past century our home has taken great leaps in science and technology, it is no wonder that we’ve grown dependent on both. We’ve struggled to achieve great heights in making our lives more comfortable, not stopping to think about what this does to where we are now. Somehow, awareness rapidly spreads as there are many avenues to publish one’s opinion, cry or protest. And among these gave rise to the awareness of environment. Pope Francis’ second encyclical, Laudato Si (Praise be to You) wherein its title is an Umbrian phrase from St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun, tackles the different avenues of man and society’s well-being, their development, how far they’ve gone and how they have affected earth, our home. These are environmentalism, poverty, science and modernism, and technology. In his second encyclical, the pontiff critiques consumerism, and irresponsible development, laments environmental degradation and global warming, and calls all people of the world to take “swift and unified global action.” It is within our purpose of existing that we do everything in our ability to make sure we do our part in healing our wounded home. 13

  • 19. are old Paulinians. Nevertheless, I understood the book of Genesis! I loved Abraham’s faith to the Lord, imagine, he almost sacrificed his son! What a test that was. I liked it when the teacher told your stories, chapter by chapter, detail by detail. I understood it better. I can’t help but to think, the people who wrote the bible, how wise were they? For every cloth, jewelry and event it has a meaning! I wonder if it’s still practiced today. I also memorized the books because we were once assigned to make a song out of it, to be familiarized with the books. Exodus was cool too! How come you can retell these kind of stories and never missing out the little details? The Pharaoh was abusive, wasn’t he? The plagues, tsk tsk. He only released the people after the tenth! I always imagine it in my head, the angel of death, maybe in a black form with its wings as dark as the nightfall, billowing black smoke, passing by the rock houses with the blood of the chicken by the door. How terrifying would that be? I also witnessed in this book the true colors of a human. I mean, look! Moses gave them everything when the people were given the freedom but all they did was to complain! I am guilty of it, sometimes. But I wish people would somehow erase this kind of trait from their whole being, no? The judges, oh how foolish of Samson right? I wish I won’t be like him someday. I shall know my limits and that my secrets shall stay with me and only be revealed to my future one. The Kings on the other hand, I also enjoyed it! But I can’t seem to like anyone other than King David because he was still favored by God after mourning for his sin and He gave another son to him. I wish I could be like that. Without pride I would acknowledge my sin. Hmm, you seem bored now reading my letter. It’ll end, no worries! A little bit of 2 pages and you’ll say bye-bye too! Ha ha ha! Oh wait, I almost forgot, there were the prophets! The one who saw the coming of Christ. Who was it again? Jeremiah? Hosea? They all sound the same! No, not Ezekiel.. Is it Isaiah? Yes! Him! Can I also be granted of that power? To see the future? How famous will I be, no? How many people would come after me, asking about their future. But I wouldn’t think I’d like it, ‘cause you see, I like spontaneity. Would you like to know when you would get married? Have kids? Or even when will be the specific date of your death? Naahhh. I’ll probably stick to praying, I know He’ll listen to me and guide me, right? That’s what you taught us! I was challenged with your prayers! My schoolmates who studied in this school past few years had no fuss of memorizing the school’s prayer anymore! I had a hard time. He he, but it was fine. I felt I belong when I’m praying the same words with them. I think it’s not 2 pages, I’ll end it now. Thank you, RelEd101! I promise, I will carry all these lectures you’ve taught us! I’ll try not to embarrass you when I’ll go to RelED102. Of course, I’ll get intimidated again but at least I have the knowledge, right? Have fun teaching the incoming freshmen soon! Or maybe the ones who have dropped your subject, I think they haven’t realize yet that 19
  • 20. you’re also fun. No worries, I will share your words to everyone, not just in school, until my home and until I see duplicate little versions of me. I hope not to be with you again! Ha ha! I want to keep moving forward, and going back to you means I failed! But no, I trust myself. I think I passed you, right? You’re not easy but you’re tricky, especially during exams. I will miss my novice mind playing around with you. God bless us both! Sincerely, A learning Man “ We thank you Mrs. Jessievic Pico for giving us the opportunity and trusting us to make a special project that enhanced our skills and quality time together as a group.
