Undergrowth – Australian Arts UK, a two-year
program of Australian contemporary arts, is a
response to the expanding interest and
demand from the UK for original and intriguing
Australian arts and culture.
In 2006, Undergrowth is again
lifting the lid on the cutting edge
of Australian contemporary
arts. UK audiences will see the
latest experimental work by
leading Australian new media
and live arts practitioners.
Indigenous artists from Australia
will share their rich traditional
and contemporary culture
through dance, music, visual
arts and theatre.
And, in two new presentations,
Undergrowth 2006 will show
Australian and UK artists
working side-by-side in
innovative co-productions;
Breathing Space Australia
between Arnolfini, Bristol
and The Performance Space,
Sydney, and the ground
breaking SKID 180 between
the UK’s Contact Theatre and
Australia’s Arena Theatre
Company.
Undergrowth 2006 is a
glimpse of Australian
contemporary arts that ensures
you will want to discover more.

A message from Jennifer Bott, CEO,
Australia Council for the Arts
2 3
I am pleased to say that the
first year of Undergrowth –
Australian Arts UK has
exceeded all our expectations
with the richness and diversity
of arts that we have been able
to offer our friends in the UK.
More than 20 highly
successful presentations –
across all art forms – have
been held in London and in
many of Britain’s regional
centres. The high points of a
very comprehensive program
have included internationally
acclaimed performances by
The Australian Ballet, the
launch of the London
Australian Film Festival and the
Australian showcase at the
London Book Fair.
The very gratifying response
that has welcomed all these
presentations in 2005 augurs
well for another successful
year in 2006, the second of
the two-year program. Again,
the program will present first
class offerings not only in the
performing arts, but also the
visual and new media arts.
From the productions of
flagship Australian arts
companies to those of middle
and smaller scale art houses,
lovers of art and culture in the
UK can expect to be able to
select from presentations of
distinction and innovation.
The Australia International
Cultural Council is committed
to building a dynamic and
distinctive image of Australian
arts internationally, and
Undergrowth is making a
major contribution to this aim
by presenting artistic practice
and output of the highest
standard. I sincerely wish that
you will enjoy all Undergrowth
has to offer and you are
inspired and enriched by the
experience.
Alexander Downer
Minister for Foreign Affairs
We are delighted to present the
Undergrowth 2006 program.
Throughout 2006, Undergrowth
– Australian Arts UK will
continue to exhilarate
audiences with showcases of
some of Australia’s finest
contemporary artists and arts
companies.
The program will include a
special focus on Indigenous
arts from Australia, with tours of
Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Bush
and Company B’s Page 8 to the
UK. And once again, diverse and
innovative projects ranging
across contemporary
performance, literature, film,
new media and visual arts will
be featured at some of the
UK’s most prestigious venues
and festivals.
The Australia Council greatly
values the support of the
Australian High Commission in
London for Undergrowth, and
we also acknowledge with
appreciation the support of the
Department of Foreign Affairs
and Trade through the Australia
International Cultural Council.
We warmly thank our
presenting partners in the UK
for their commitment to
Australian arts and artists.

AND INTRIGUE, ARNOLFINI, BRISTOL
13-19 FEBRUARY
GREENROOM, MANCHESTER
Breathing Space Australia is an
ongoing collaboration between
Arnolfini in Bristol and The
Performance Space in Sydney.
In this very special event, five
highly original Australian artists
present their contemporary
performance work alongside
their British peers. Ranging from
screen based installation works,
to solo dance with spoken text
and live sound, to durational
performance, these stimulating
works represent a small
selection of Australia’s exciting
contemporary arts practice.
John Gillies’ digital film and
installation, Divide, features four
men, 35 sheep, a Chinese
opera singer and a horse, in a
landscape with texts from the
Old Testament.
Monika Tichacek’s video
installation, The Shadowers,
portrays a chain of abstract and
surreal interactions between a
trio of characters.
Deborah Pollard’s Shapes of
Sleep is a sculptural installation
and eight-hour durational
performance based on video
footage of sleeping. The
conscious and unconscious
movements of the recorded
sleepers are presented in
miniature, while five live
performers move between
various sleeping postures.
Martin del Amo’s UNDER
ATTACK is a solo dance work
with spoken text investigating
the body as a battleground.
Set to live sound by Gail Priest,
it addresses the fragility
of the human body under
constant threat by aggressive
forces – from digitalisation to
decomposition.

1-12 FEBRUARY
INBETWEEN TIME FESTIVAL OF LIVE ART
AND INTRIGUE, ARNOLFINI, BRISTOL
Lynette Wallworth is an artist
whose practice spans video
installation, photography and
short film. She currently
specialises in the creation of
gently immersive installation
environments that rely on
activation by the
participant/viewer. She brings
to the Inbetween Time Festival
Still: Waiting 2, an intriguing
large-scale projection examining
the significance of a moment of
first meeting.
Filmed on high-definition video in
an eerie twilight, Still: Waiting 2
directs visitors sonically through
the installation. Projected in the
gallery space is footage of an
Australian River Gum filmed on
the edge of the Flinders
Rangers and home to a huge
number of native parrots -
Corellas. When a viewer enters
the space, sensors are
activated, causing these birds
to fly from the tree. The viewer
has unsettled the environment
by entering it and must learn to
negotiate the space for the
birds to return. You can never
know whether you have seen
all there is to see in this
intimate visual experience and
yet it is clear that your very
presence impacts on it.
Still: Waiting 2 is an engaging,
thought provoking installation
that questions whether there
may be ways to meet across
cultural distance that do not
cause rupture.

“a bizarre and well-executed look at the
suppression of self.” THE AGE, MELBOURNE
Access All Areas is an electrifying exploration of
claustrophobia in relation to workplace
expectations and the open plan office. Dennis
recreates a persona of vulnerable dysfunction for
each performance, using idiosyncratic
movement, spoken word and extended vocal
techniques. Interweaving third party
conversations, everyday interactions between
lovers and observed habitual relationship
patterns, Love Song Dedication is a fragile and
raw exploration of the ordinariness of love.
Rosie Dennis began her career as a writer and
director. Now primarily known as an improviser,
her practice extends across disciplines working
as a vocalist, poet and performer with musicians,
dancers, new media and visual artists. Dennis
brings to the UK two separate works, Access All

Australian Film
Festival and Tour
8 9
The London Australian Film Festival, held each
year at the Barbican Centre in London, will be
followed by a special film festival tour across
the UK from April to June 2006. Presenting the
best new movie releases from Australia, the
festival will feature award winning films such
as The Proposition, written by Nick Cave and
starring Guy Pearce, and Sarah Watt’s
internationally acclaimed Look Both Ways.
Documentaries and short films showcasing
the extraordinary talent of Australian
filmmakers are also part of a program that will
delight, challenge and intrigue UK audiences.
Touring dates and venues will be confirmed in
early 2006.
“The quality and ambition of many of the
new films (Little Fish, Look Both Ways,
Wolf Creek) was striking, and a sign of
the industry’s maturity. Quirky comedies
have to some extent been replaced by
hard-hitting and sometimes violent
dramas. Other films had a gentler style,
but still plenty to say. It was a good year
for our cinema.” THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
AUSTRALIAN COMMERCIAL CRAFT GALLERIES WILL ALSO BE PRESENT AT COLLECT, WITH NAREK GALLERIES SHOWCASING GLASS WORKS BY
MEL DOUGLAS AND BRIAN HIRST, AND RAGLAN GALLERY REPRESENTING ARTISTS SANDRA BLACK, MATTHEW CURTIS, BEN EDOLS & KATHY

COLLECT, VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM,
LONDON
Australian Contemporary
presents the work of Australian
contemporary craft artists and
designers to international
audiences. BARE and beyond is
a significant national survey of
contemporary craft and design
curated by one of Australia’s
most respected writers in this
area, Wendy Walker. The
exhibition features a remarkable
range of small to medium-sized
works in a variety of media,
from ceramics to metal, in an
exquisite survey reflecting the
use of minimalism and
ornamentation in current craft
and design.
In selecting works for this
exhibition Walker posed the
question: “In the first decade of
the 21st century is there
evidence of a renewed interest
- if not yet a renaissance - in
colour, illustration and pattern
within contemporary Australian
craft and design practice?”
BARE and beyond features the
work of ceramic artists Prue
Venables and Bruce Nuske,
furniture designer Khai Liew and
Julie Blyfield, an artist exploring
the crossover between
jewellery and objects. The
collection includes functional
and non-functional craft and
design pieces that either
demonstrate a minimalist
aesthetic or reveal a
preoccupation with pattern,
illustration and decoration.
There are also beautiful objects
that marry reduced form with
surface ornamentation.

leading theatre
companies for young
audiences, with an international
reputation for creating inspiring,
provocative and adrenaline
pumping performances.
In an exciting co-production,
Arena and Contact Theatre
present an exhilarating new
work, SKID 180. Set in the
underworld of Manchester’s
BMX scene, SKID 180 is high
energy multimedia theatre that
expertly fuses video art, sound,
poetry and live BMX action.
Mc Stone, a young man and
ward of the state, decides to
make a break from the
authorities and establish
life on the Manchester streets
where he meets a gang of BMX
riders and is exposed to a
subculture of revolutionary
wheels. In a quest to shed light
on Mc Stone's past, the gang
breaks into the City of Paper, a
mythical government building
where all official records are
kept. But the gang's motives
prove more complex than is first
revealed, triggering a startling
chain of events that leave
Mc Stone reeling.
SKID 180 is an international
collaboration bringing together
artists from Melbourne and
Manchester, young people and
BMX riders. The striking set
design is constructed of ramps
and multiple scrims against
processed BMX footage and a
stunningly recapitulated view
of Manchester and Melbourne.

THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
Australia's only national touring
theatre company, The Bell

produces uniquely Australian
productions of the works of
William Shakespeare. In this,
their first major international
tour in the UK, The Bell
Shakespeare Company
presents Shakespeare’s
The Comedy Of Errors with a
marvellous sense of farce and
fun. Directed by Artistic Director
John Bell, and featuring the
company’s acclaimed
ensemble, this version of the
Bard’s hilarious tale of mistaken
identity and mayhem will take
audiences on a magical ride.
Originally produced in 2002 and
remounted again in 2004 to
extraordinary critical acclaim,
this production features six of
Bell Shakespeare’s Associate
Artists – actors who have
worked with the company
extensively over its fifteen-year
history. The expertise of this
group of actors is a key factor
in the success of Bell
Shakespeare’s work.
Fuelled by the cunning tricks of
