4. PURPOSE OF PACKAGING AND PACKAGE LABEL
1. Physical protection – protection from mechanical shock,
vibration, electrostatic discharge, compression, temperature
and moisture
2. Barrier protection – a barrier to oxygen water vapour, dust.
Some packages have desiccants
3. Containment or agglomeration – small objects are typically
grouped together in one package for reason of storage and
selling efficiency
4. Information transmission – packages and labels
communicate how to use transport, recycle or dispose off
the package or product - used also for track and trace
purposes (serial and lot number), expiry dates.
5. 5. Marketing – used to encourage potential buyers to purchase
the product . Marketing communication and display
6. Security – packaging reduces security risks of transporting
and deter manipulation through use of temper evident. Can
have an authentication, seals and the use of security printing
– avoid counterfeit
7. Convenience – Adds convenience in distribution, handling
stacking, display sale, opening, reclosing, using , dispensing ,
reusing, recycling and ease of disposal.
8. Portion control – Single serving of single dosage packaging
has a precise amount of contents to control usage
6. TYPES OF PACKAGING
1. Primary packaging – material that first
envelopes the product and holds it- its in
contact with contents e.g. Shrink wrap.
2. Secondary Packaging – outside a primary
packaging, and prevents pilferage or to group
primary packages together e.g. a carton.
3. Tertiary packaging – used for bulk handling
warehouse storage and transport shipping
