- 2. Jewish Family Service is a human service organization which reflects the Jewish tradition of caring and compassion for all people in need. Through professional counseling, advocacy and educational programming, our services seek to enhance and strengthen the quality of individual, family and community life.

- 4. JFS Expanded our mental health/ counseling program with the addition of a another full-time licensed social worker. Provided mental health services to over 200 individuals, couples and families experiencing challenges in their daily living. “My three children and I stayed together as a family because of the services and help we received through JFS”
- 5. Last year case management for older adults in Lackawanna County, Luzerne, Monroe, and Wayne counties helped 27 older adults Maximize their independence, health and safety. “I am grateful that you were there for me, willing to work long hours for little financial reward- always going the extra mile for me”
- 6. Provided Guardianship of Person Service to protect Vulnerable adults in our community who have been deemed incapacitated. “Because of the staff of JFS, I feel like I’m not alone when problems arise.”
- 7. Dedicated volunteers delivered over 2,900 Kosher Meals on Wheels to help the elderly remain independent at home. “I am grateful to be part of a community that is fortunate enough to have JFS, and I am proud to call myself a KMOW volunteer”
- 8. The Mae S. Gelb Kosher food pantry helps those in need have increased access to adequate, nutritious foods during times of financial stress. “If it wasn’t for JFS, I don’t know where I’d be today”
- 9. Regional Holocaust Survivors received over $9,000 in financial assistance with monies received from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany Emergency Assistance Program.
- 10. A collaborative effort between JFS, the Scranton District Dental Society and Fortis Institute provided over $26,000 of free dental care for eligible Lackawanna County residents who are uninsured and unable to afford dental treatment.
- 11. Passover holiday assistance helped provide traditional Passover foods to over 130 adults and 160 children in our community.
- 12. JFS offers education and enrichment through lectures, guest speakers, and workshops on topics relevant to family life, Jewish identity and current issues.
- 13. JFS Volunteers act as drivers and runners for Kosher Meals on Wheels, friendly visitors, shoppers for our Kosher Food Pantry and assist with preparing and delivering holiday gift projects to the homebound. Volunteers who deliver meals are interviewed and screened by Jewish Family Service.
- 14. JFS has maintained the highest national standards of professional performance as required by the Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services valid through December 2017
- 15. The PQI Plan is broad-based, agency-wide, inclusive of staff, stakeholders and consumers. The plan is designed to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of services provided, determine the quality and achievements of determined outcomes and take corrective action to improve and correct any deficiencies noted.
- 16. At NO TIME is the name of a client used unless it is necessary for the service or activity being delivered to that person. If disclosure is needed, a signed Release of Information from the client is required.
- 17. The Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act is a federal law that: 1. Protects the privacy of a client’s personal and health information. 2. Provides for electronic and physical security of personal and health information. 3. Simplifies billing and other transactions. All JFS employees, board members and volunteers are required to be trained on HIPAA policies and procedures.

- The Jewish Family Service offers professional counseling for families, couples, individuals and groups. Our staff is professionally trained and our social workers are licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. CONSULTATION SERVICES Other agencies and school programs may utilize the expertise of our staff as consultants for specific problems, issues or projects.
- JFS has special concerns for older adults , 60 years and older, in our local community and is ready to counsel these individuals and their families around issues of isolation, illness, dependency; as well as needed services of in-home help, companions, friendly visitors, and other vital needs to help maintain the older person at home.
- Guardianship is the court-appointed responsibility of an organization to make a combination of informed personal decisions on behalf of an individual who has been deemed incapacitated by the Court. Decision-making authority is limited by the court order and must be carried out in accordance with state law. The Coordinator of Older Adult Services is certified as a National Certified Guardian by the Center of Guardianship Certification.
- This program , in cooperation with the Meals on Wheels Office of Lackawanna County and the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, delivers kosher meals to those in need.
- The Kosher Food Pantry provides assistance with food and other necessary household items to families and individuals during times of significant financial stress. All efforts are made to follow strict kosher guidelines.
- Offers services which are designed to help elderly survivors of the Holocaust live their remaining years safely, with dignity, and as independent as possible. Jews who resided in European countries which were subject to Nazi rule and control between 1933 and 1945 are eligible. Financial assistance is available to those survivors who qualify through grants received from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, Inc. Our social worker provides these services in Scranton, Wilkes Barre and also serves the surrounding areas of Wayne, Pike and Monroe counties.
- Jewish Family Service , in partnership with volunteer dentists from the Scranton District Dental Society and a partnership with Fortis Institute, administers the DentalCare Center which provides professional dental services to those who meet specific eligibility requirements. All treatments are provided in private dental offices, with initial examination and diagnosis at Fortis Institute Dental Hygiene Clinic, Scranton.
- Short-term financial aid is provided for individuals and families who qualify and cannot afford food, shelter or other emergency needs. Examples are payments of utility bills to avoid shut off, emergency medical bills and transportation. The Holiday Assistance Program ensures that the beauty of the Jewish holidays is shared throughout the year.

- Jewish Family Service is accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Family and Children Services (COA) since 1989. COA partners with human service organizations worldwide to improve service delivery by developing, applying and promoting the highest standards of current professional practice. Maintaining our accreditation status says a great deal about the credibility of JFS and validates our financial, administrative and management integrity. The comprehensive process of reaccreditation directs our agency to update and review all areas of functioning to include human resources, financial management, performance quality improvement, risk management, ethics as well as management of all program areas from the intake process, treatment plan development, client rights and outcome measurements. Achieving accreditation helps JFS to focus on our unique mission and improve the lives of the people we serve. JFS is proud to be a member of the COA family of excellence.
- Jewish Family Service is committed to its mission and is committed to a plan of Performance Quality Improvement (PQI) through implementation of a comprehensive process that involves assessing and improving its overall performance and promotes quality outcomes for each service and program area. This PQI Plan is broad-based, agency-wide, inclusive of staff, stakeholders and consumers. The plan is designed to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of services provided, determine the quality and achievements of determined outcomes and take corrective action to improve and correct any deficiencies noted.

Maintaining this confidentiality is the most crucial, and often, the most difficult charge of all of us associated with our organization- Staff, Board Member or Volunteer.
