3. Book Summary
A hobbit who was quite content in
staying at home and living a life of
no adventures, until a wizard
comes by and offers him a place in
a party that is going to be traveling
to ancient dwarven city which now
is the home of a dragon.
The Hobbit is a work of fiction.
The novel can be classified as an
adventure fantasy novel.
The novel can be classified as an
Epic, Fiction, Fantasy book.
I chose this book because I had
seen the movie first so thought I
may as well read the books to see
what the series was about and this
turned out to be one of my favorite
worlds.
The author was inspired by a
scribbled note he made while
marking exams, the note was “in a
hole there, there lived a hobbit.”
Of this little note he created this
world
4. Characters
Bilbo Baggins is the main
character of this story, he
accompanies an adventuring party
of dwarves and a wizard.
The story also introduces a
company of dwarves who are lead
by Thorin Oakenshield
Finally the last character we will
speak about is Gandalf the wizard
who helps and guides the Dwarves
and Bilbo
The Company encounters several
other character along their journey.
(1) What are the traits that you found appealing
or disturbing about this character? Bilbo being
the main character we get to know him the most, I
would say as the story starts he is rather timid and
cares to much about materialistic things, as the book
advances he starts to be more courageous.
(2) Can you relate to this character? Why? As the
story continues he takes more risks and really
becomes part of the company what I admired about
him despite being afraid, he still volunteers to be
put into the most dangerous situations to earn his
cut of their reward.
(3) Did you like or hate this character? Why? I
liked the character because of his view on things he
often sees something and then bring up a memory
from some part of his life which is generally quite
entertaining
(4) If you met this character, what would you ask
him/her? I think I would ask Bilbo why exactly he
didn't kill Gollum…
5. Literary Devices
One of my parts of this story was
setting as the story takes places in
a world filled with magic, moving
mountains, deep forest and so
much more this amazing land is
know as Middle Earth.
However not all is good and pure
in Middle Earth there is a lot of
evil and darkness and the Tolkien
really shows us this in his telling
of the interactions between
characters and the moods that are
held in the air between the tense
moments the book holds. The
reader is constantly holding their
breathe as to how the character is
going to react.
I think that a huge lesson
that I took from this was the
reward in an adventure is the
journey and not actually the
rewards and treasures them
selves as well as how
companionship keeps these
adventures going and how it
is used to form the strongest
of bonds between characters.
6. Literary Devices (continued)
The culture in this story is
quite unique I’ve not read
or seen a movie where a
similar culture exists, the
culture is rather hard to
simply some up as there
are far to many aspects to
be considered, taking into
account the different races
that are introduced,
Hobbits, Dwarves,
Wizards and Elves also
Goblins and Orcs
The perspective of this often
changes sometimes the POV
changes in the same chapter;
so pay attention or you may
find yourself lost.
7. My Impressions
I felt that this book really had me
excited to read it most of the time,
however at some points it does get
hugely over descriptive on points that
are irrelevant to the actual task and
topic at hand. These points almost
never come up again and seem to
make it drag on.
Despite the tediousness that occurs not
to frequently, this book is still
absolutely brilliant. The little hero
seeks to be left alone and shut off from
the world, but then burns to prove
himself and beat the big and scary
villain as well as go through a process
that will change him forever. This is
seen almost through out the book as
when he tells the reader about his
feelings and fears.
I rate this book a solid 4/5
