29. MouseMonitor™ S
Great Surgical Monitoring Solution
Researcher Observations
Product Workshop, Experimental Biology 201429
The MouseMonitor S has been a great
addition to the Mouse Phenotyping
Core, we use it for monitoring the mice
and maintaining body temperature
during various surgical procedures. It
has proven to be a very effective and
cost-efficient alternative to telemetry
but it still provides excellent ECG signals
from all three leads.

Editor's Notes
Surgical Monitoring: Generate Consistent Surgical Outcomes & Satisfy your IACUC with the MouseMonitor™ S
Hi everyone, thank you for coming and welcome to this product workshop on Rodent Surgical Monitoring with the MouseMonitor S. What I mean by surgical monitoring is simply continuous monitoring of vital signs the entire duration of surgery preparation, surgery, wrapup and recovery. During the course of the presentation I am going to refer to a mouse or mice many times. I understand that everyone here may not be working with the mouse research model, but may instead be working with rats, bats, naked mole rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits or other larger animal models. The MouseMonitor S has been tested with all of these animal models and works very well as the core research tool for monitoring the health of the animal with a wide variety of animal species.
Why Surgical Monitoring?
Quick Overview of the Main Steps in Preclinical Rodent Surgeries
The Increasing IACUC Surgical Requirements
How Surgical Monitoring Can Help You in your Many Roles as a Preclinical Researcher
How Surgical Monitoring can improve the consistency of your surgical outcomes
Induce Anesthesia – placing the mouse in an induction chamber
Transfer the mouse to your surgical surface and Stabilize & Maintain Anesthesia
Prepare Subject & Surgical Site for your procedure of interest
Perform Surgical Procedure
Tie up your procedure and begin the process of Recovery from Anesthesia
Protocols Requirements Increasing
We have heard this from many of our users
You may be seeing this at your institution
Requiring More Monitoring
Heart Rate
Respiration Rate
Core Temperature
Blood Oxygenation
Additionally, they are likely Requiring Better Heating
Must be able to adjust to changing lab environmental conditions
Must be able to adjust to changes in heating requirements during surgery
Must be able to provide adequate heating during longer interventions
Finally, many IACUCs are Requiring More Documentation
prove you are following protocol
Researcher and Data Scientist
Anesthesiologist
Surgeon
Person in charge of Quality Control
Person in charge of IACUC Compliance
Monitoring Helps You at Every Step (Better Examples, Improve Notes)
Monitor & See Impact of Every Step in Realtime
Identify Problems Quick Identify When Bad Stuff Happens
Make Intervention Make Timely Intervention
Know When To Cut & Run Evaluate and Make Intervention Endpoint Decision
Provide a Stable Preparation
Ensure Adequate Warming by monitoring Core Temperature
Ensure Appropriate Anesthesia by monitoring Heart & Respiration Rate
Ensure Adequate Ventilation by monitoring Blood Oxygenation
Spot Potential Problems Earlier
Each Sign is Early Indicator that Enables Researcher to Make Intervention
EXAMPLE!!!
Improve Survival Rates
By providing a stable preparation & quickly spotting potential problems you will eliminate many unsuccessful and improve borderline surgeries
This means fewer total surgeries will be required, giving you more time writing your next paper and a happier IACUC
Surgical Monitoring Reduces Variability
Additionally, providing a stable preparation and quickly spotting and responding to problems you reduce the intervention variability and increase the consistency of the outcome under investigation
Doesn’t this already exist in the clinical space?

compact vital signs presentation simplifies use and helps quickly build the surgeon’s intuitive knowledge of subject health
All about supporting the researcher during surgery
1950 First clinical use of a device that two doctors devised for monitoring the heart during surgery
1954 by ‘54 there were a few companies producing commercial physiologic monitor, initial devices has 3-5” round CRT screens with low phosphor persistence times so the ECG signal looked like bounding ball with a comet tail. Heart rate calculation was not a standard feature and relied on the surgeon to make a mental calculation of heart rate. When it was available it was with a gauge type of display.
60’s – Brought memory tape loops to record data and allowing alarm events to be triggered off of larger data set
Numeric displays using Nixie Tubes
70’s – widespread replacement of tube-based electronics with transistors and solid state technology
Larger 6-8” rectangular CRT displays with no-fade technology
Isolated patient inputs
Variable sweep speed
Heart rate was most commonly reported with a Horizontal bar graph, though some models began to use segmented LED displays
80’s – larger, color CRT displays, hot-swappable modularization and growing network integration
Number of displayed waveforms increased from 2 to 6
90’s – electronics miniaturization and Monochrome LCDs brought about more equipment mobility, the concept of continuum of care came out and hospitals began standardizing on a single manufacturer for the entire hospital’s monitors.
2000’s and beyond – extensive use of microprocessors, LCDs, digital electronics and internet connectivity increases the base level of capability used throughout the hospital and brings the promise of continuum of care full circle.
Initial adoption of Clinical Physiologic Monitors
Spurred on by the VA in 1970 with the release of a document titled “Specifications for Biomedical Monitoring Systems” (X-1414) establishing minimum performance criterion for physiologic monitors.
Nursing, Surgery & Anesthesia professional organizations have continued to Increase these Standards of Care in Decades since
Decreased Recovery Costs
Less ICU Hours
Quicker overall recovery rate
Better Patient Outcomes
Wouldn’t you like to have better data, higher survival rates and quicker recoveries in your lab
These devices have been thoroughly tested on humans and as a result have been deemed safe for use on rodents!

Preclinical Surgery is Challenging
In addition to lots of anesthesia & research responsibilities, Preclinical surgery places a lot of physical and mental demands on the surgeon, demanding precise manipulation of very small physiology while dealing with potentially very fast changes in patient condition
Critical Data All in one Place
Quickly see Core Temperature, Heart Rate & Respiration Rate so you can easily notice a early drop in temperature or heart rate that is a sign of deteriorating subject condition
Instead of looking at multiple devices spread across your lab bench all of the critical subject condition information is in one place on one device
This gives you the ability to intervene and stabilize subject condition before continuing, stopping potential problems in their tracks before they get out of control
Enables you to return your mental focus to the challenging surgery

Different Types of Studies with different views & settings
Grows with your Lab
Training Tool to help new surgeons develop intuitive knowledge of the subject’s condition in addition to physical surgical skills
Helps coordinate research in larger labs by helping to provide uniform experimental conditions and making it easy to create & share standard experiment presets
Expansion modules allow you to easily build your lab’s capabilities as needs increase
Doesn’t require complicated and expensive data acquisition hardware and software when you need to add another instrument
Current Modules: Analog Output & Pulse Oximeter
Upcoming Modules: Invasive Pressure, OEM partnerships & ongoing development
Great Value
Costs 50% less than an unintegrated system of many parts and works better
Cheapest way to get high resolution, publication quality data
Cheapest way to build your capabilities over time
Only way to get a standalone system that lets you document your studies with screenshots and recordings
Whether your needs any particular moment are:
Researcher - Provides you with high quality data, screenshots, records
Anesthesiologist - Improves your anesthesia delivering skills, insuring a stable base preparation
Surgeon - Enables you to focus on surgery
QA/QC & IACUC Compliance Officer - Reduces the time you spend documenting surgeries
The MouseMonitor S is a research tool that gives you critical information that is clearly presented to help improve surgical outcomes and make it easier for you to tell the story of your research
Improves Surgical Outcomes
