3. WELL DRILLING
DID YOU
KNOW?
Drilling, like
exploration, is an
activity that
demands time and
financial resources.
For this reason, a
drilling rig is only
installed and begins
to drill when
geologists and
geophysicists have
agreed on the most
suitable location for
the search for
hydrocarbons in the
subsoil.
A BIT OF HISTORY
The tankers were not the first to drill deep
wells: 2,000 years ago the Chinese did it to find
brine, with which they obtained salt. To achieve
their purposes, they had a team consisting of a
wooden structure, from which a sharp and
heavy tool was suspended by cable. The
intermittent percussion on the ground was
piercing successive strata of the subsoil until
arriving at the objective. This ingenious system
allowed drilling up to more than 900 meters
deep, although it took years to complete the
work. In the first years of the oil industry, the
same principles were used, from percussion
drilling. Although still in certain circumstances
and mainly in the United States, this technique
is still used (much improved compared to the
last century) it was universally replaced by the
rotary drilling method.

5. The oil is deep, generally
three thousand to four
thousand meters, but
nevertheless there are
wells of five thousand and
even well six thousand
meters deep. According to
the projected depth of the
well, the formations that
are going to cross and the
conditions of the subsoil,
the most suitable drilling
equipment is chosen.
D
Drilling and exploration are a
type of activity that requires a
lot of time and also financial
resources...
Hence, a drilling rig only installs and begins
to drill only when geophysicists and
geologists have agreed on the most capable
location to search for hydrocarbons located
in the subsoil. Most of the oil wells are
drilled with the rotary procedure. In this
kind of rotary drilling, it consists of a tower
that keeps the drill string is formed by
several coupled cylinders.

6. The drilling wells can take
different directions, either vertical
horizontal or inclined
Vertical drilling
Built in the mid-19th century, the
first oil wells were vertical holes dug
by hand execution equipment.Called
conventional drilling, this traditional
well sucks the oil by a fairly shallow
one. This requires the construction
of a large number of vertical wells
across the surface of an oil reserve.
Although vertical drilling
installation and maintenance costs
are relatively low, these oil wells
leave the tanks untapped.
Horizontal drilling
Horizontal drilling is the process of
drilling a well, from the surface to
a subsurface location just above the
oil or gas reserve called the "starting
point."
Next, the well is deflected from the
vertical plane by making a curve to
enter the reservoir through an entry
point with an almost horizontal
inclination. Continue drilling
horizontally until the desired hole is
reached.
Inclination Oil
drilling inclination differs from the
horizontal because the drill digs in a
direct cut to the tank, rather than down
and up. Tilt perforations of a central
pad by pulling oil from a large
perimeter. Excavating oil Slant is
another form of directional drilling that
allows exploration under buildings or
wetlands without interruption of the
land or of the inhabitants. Drilling
Slant is an ecological method to get to
exploit oil from existing wells.
Colombia, third most
expensive country in oil well
drilling The report established
that Bolivia has the highest costs in
the drilling process, reaching a
value of about US $11.4 million per
well. Bolivia, Mexico and Colombia
are among the countries in Latin
America with the highest drilling
costs. In contrast, Ecuador and
Argentina occupy the most
economic places, as revealed by a
report by the Colombian Chamber
of Petroleum Goods and Services
(Campetrol). Colombia holds one
of the first positions, with figures
close to US $10 million, explained
by factors such as the mobilization
of equipment and civil works.
These represent 14.2% and 20.6%
respectively in the cost
distribution.

7. Ocean Drilling Rig
Ocean offshore oil drilling
platforms and open all over the
world are in the 21st century,
the state - is an innovative
method of oil extraction. The
computer programs control the
operation, which uses the
horizontally directed method.
Less ecological progress in
directional oil drilling in the
earth, the ocean drilling
platform remains one of the
most controversial
environmental problems of the
global community.
