2. A trip to the Transylvanian village of Viscri is similar to a trip back in time. A Saxon village has been preserved intact for
hundreds of years! It's where Prince Charles de Wales bought a building.
Village rules
Viscri, formerly called Giscriu, is a village in Bunești commune in Braşov County, Transylvania, Romania.
The settlement functions according to its own rules, hundreds of years old: here the insulating pan does not exist, nor the
shimmering colors on the facades. The village is on the UNESCO heritage list. There are no street names at Viscri, and the
hostels did not show the name or advertisements. The village became known after it was discovered that Prince Charles of
Great Britain owns a house here and spends his holidays several times a year. The guesthouses are discreet and the hosts are
welcoming. You can find chalets that keep traditional Saxon furniture, and have modern amenities.
3. The village's atmosphere is soothing, the façades of the
Saxon houses, the tranquility of these people and the
warmth with which every visitor is welcomed.
Carriage trips can be made through the woods in the area,
go to the ditch, to the torch, to the coal, to the black bread
oven. The villagers will invite you to see how they do their
traditional activities: braided, mown. In Viscri village every
visitor is invited to ride the cart, for them it is the most
normal thing, this fact giving a note of originality to the
village to the detriment of the city and also represents the
traditional village.
Natural beauty is another asset of the village. The
landscapes are wonderful, the virgin forests escaped the
destruction of civilization. The species of plants and animals
that the rest of Europeans have just heard have been
preserved. John Akeroyd, a renowned English botanist, said,
"The British would make this a natural reserve, which
would make a lot of money through tourism"
4. The most visited place in this village is the church. The Saxon name of the settlement, Weißkirch, comes from the translation of the
Latin name Alba ecclesia (the "White Church") that appears in official documents even before the foundation of the Saxon town.
The museum has very interesting objects. Looking at the old boxes of neighborhoods, you will find relevant details about the
organization of the Saxon communities. The museum also owns guild boxes and various tools, furniture pieces, traditional harbors.
The ‘’bacon’’ room is interesting in terms of the tradition of keeping bacon, an ancient custom that has been part of community life
since the 1990s. Here, all people brought their bacon to keep it. This habit is found in almost all the Saxon villages, and usually the
priest of the village keeps the key. It went with the bacon owner to take as much as he wanted, but only from his own product.
5. Since Prince Charles and his foundation, MET
(the foundation that protested against the
Ceauşis village systematization plan) began to
restore the houses of the Saxons in Viscri, the
village resurrected. The villagers began to
renovate their houses hundreds of years old, the
area of Romanian traditional goods has
flourished, and the price of real estate has risen
at a dizzying pace
The Felt Workshop organizes seminar visits to
which participants can learn this art. About two
hours later, the artisan presents and explains all
the phases of work, the technological process
that comes from the simple sheep wool to the
slippers or the felt hat.
6. Kronenfest (feast of the crown)
This is a summer ceremony specific to the Saxon communities in the
ethnographic area of Rupea - Viscri, Buneşti, Fiser, Dacia, which
consists of intermingling several colored flowers, trimming ribbons
and placing them in the garden of the parish house.
On the morning of the day the ceremony takes place, the villagers
dress in popular costumes and go to work, gathering around the
wedding, singing and dancing. It marks the change of the seasons,
from spring to summer, becoming a flower celebration and abundant
vegetation.
7. 15,000 tourists per year
Viscri village became famous after Prince Charles bought a house
in the area in 1996, which he paid 10,000 pounds. Since then, the
prince has spoken in many interviews about the beauties of the
village in Transylvania. According to British newspaper "Financial
Times", the English adore Transylvanian houses. Real estate prices
have risen 20 times in the last 17 years. A smaller, two-room house
cost 2,500 euros in 1996. In 2000, prices rose rapidly to 20,000
euros.
8. Architecture and furniture as a local
tradition
Households along the streets still retain the
original medieval architecture adopted by
the Saxons, although the facades are in the
18th century style. Each household has a
high-rise house and a large door, wide
enough to allow a cart with a hay. Typically,
there is a paved courtyard with river stones,
bordered on either side by a dwelling. At the
end of the yards, there is a big squeeze for
storing the hay.
The rooms are traditionally decorated, have
a terracotta stove, the furniture is old
wooden peasant, painted, also have painted
crates for the warehouse, the sheets are made
of handmade embroidery. Tourists can
admire authentic authentic harbors, working
tools or authentic pieces of furniture.
