2. Personal Statement
I’m enthusiastic, hard working, diligent, methodical, and used to working to extremely tight time schedules.
I’m a good communicator, both oral and written, and always willing to learn new tasks, or impart knowledge
to those less experienced. I have vast experience within IT, having worked on multiple platforms, used many
different software packages over a long period of time.
CAREER HISTORY:

Contract Test Analyst.
Tasks included :-
• The production of extensive Test Requirements/Conditions/Scripts from the analysis of design
documents using HP Quality Centre. Discussions with business designers over queries and
problems.
• The manual execution of scripts using the appropriate online systems and batch runs, examining
results on Unix /Java systems, Oracle databases (RDBMS), interrogation of databases using SQL
scripting PL/SQL and TOAD.
• Full lifecycle testing, including :
o Functional Testing (manual) of online systems to ensure correctness of input and output
capabilities, plus any built in help systems.
o System Integrated testing (SIT), to ensure that new processes interact with the current
system
o Regression testing, to ensure any code changes have not impacted on current code.
o UAT extensive assistance to users with their testing, setting up data for scripts and defect
management
• Predicting the output from various reporting systems, production of said reports via batch processes,
and checking the output against predictions.
• Error detection and Defect Management on HP Quality Centre, discussions with developers
where required to resolve faults and offer solutions.
• Checking of XML from batch processes to ensure correctness, before running XML files through
DOC1 procedures to produce output correspondence, and then ensuring output is correct and fit for
purpose.
• Use of Putty and WinSCP
• All tasks completed using the Waterfall/Agile/Kanban Model/BDD methodologies. This would
entail attending daily sprint meetings to report progress, problems, feedback and plan forthcoming
work.

• The production of extensive Test Requirements/Conditions/Scripts from the analysis of design
documents, and discussion with business designers over queries and problems.
• The manual execution of scripts using the appropriate online systems and batch runs, examining
results on a DB2 database using the online systems and SQL scripting, and TOAD.
• Error detection and defect raising on both a Rational Clearquest system and HP Quality Centre.
Liaison with developers to resolve problems and offer solutions.
• Full lifecycle testing, including :
o Integration testing to include combining individual software modules and testing them as a
group.
o Functional testing of online systems to ensure correctness of input and output capabilities,
plus any GUI built in help systems.
o Non-Functional testing, including correctness of data transfers between interlocking systems
and Data Migration.
o UAT assisting users with their testing, including the QA of their test designs, requirements
and scripting.

• The writing of COBOL to meet user requirements, to EDS/DWP standards.
• Testing of the coded modules against an IDMSX database.
April 1995 - June 2001 Self Employed Computer Consultant
Working as an ICL VME Analyst/Programmer for several companies including Scottish Provident,
Edinburgh, Yorkshire Electric, Leeds, Cap Gemini, London, DSS Longbenton, Scottish Power,
Glasgow, British Gas, Solihull & BSD Blackburn.
Tasks included:-
• Meeting with users to ascertain their requirements, analysing same, and to formulate those
requirements in high-level function design documents.
• The writing of detailed specifications for COBOL and APPLICATION MASTER modules to meet
those requirements.
• The coding of new and the amendment of COBOL and APPLICATION MASTER 300 modules to
SPUK standards.
• System testing of the coded modules against an IDMSX database.
• Develop COBOL TP programs for the SPYSIS project using MICRO FOCUS COBOL and
Workbench tools. The modules were tested using the Workbench Edit and Animate.
September 1985 - April 1995 Department for National Savings
Full Time Business Analyst/Programmer
From 1985 to 1995 I was involved in all aspects of development work the Department's
ICL VME mainframe. My tasks included: -
• The interviewing of users to ascertain their requirements, and formulate those requirements in high-
level function design documents.
• Design computer processes to meet those requirements. This would involve writing Detailed System
Specifications for COBOL batch programs or to write the application code in either Application
Master or Report Master.
• Unit and System testing of programs before release into 'Live' running. All of the testing was done
on IDMSX databases.
• In 1991 I was trained in COBOL programming, so that not only could I continue with my previous
work, but could now start coding the batch applications as well. The COBOL coding was designed
using the Structured Design Methodology (SDM) and would be fully unit tested by myself before
release for systems trialing.
• For the last 2 1/2years of my career with National Savings my experience in all aspects of ICL VME
has also led me to be used as a trainer. This would involve teaching new entrants to IT with the basic
courses which they needed i.e. DDS, IDMSX database & Alta data, Basic SCL & Editors. The
training would not only involve teaching, but the production of training material on the section PC,
using such packages as WordPerfect, CorelDraw, Lotus Freelance, Page Plus and others.
• Towards the end of this period I was promoted to become the IT Training manager for Durham.
