The document summarizes a project to double water storage capacity at a site in Harvey, Australia. VSL was contracted to construct a new precast concrete water tank. This would increase available storage and support a desalination plant project providing drought-proof drinking water. The desalination plant was being built in two stages, with capacity to ultimately supply 30% of the state's water needs.

▲ The project involved doubling the Water Corporation's water storage capacity at the Harvey site.
The Southern Seawater Desalination
Plant (SSDP) is Western Australia's
second major desalination project.
The plant is located at Taranto Road,
north of Binningup, approximately
150km south of Perth.
Water Corporation received
conditional environmental approval
for the plant in June 2009.
Construction of the new plant began
the following month, once full project
approval had been received from the
Federal Government.
The plant is being built in two stages,
each with a maximum capacity of 50
giga litres (GL) a year.
Initially, VSL worked as a
subcontractor on the first tank at
Binningup, with a scope of work that
included design and construction of
the tank base slab, walls and the
roof. VSL has since been appointed
to work on a second tank, under a
sub-contract to AJ Lucas.
The first stage of the scheme was
officially opened in September 2011
and is expected to reach its full
capacity of 50GL/year within a year.
It was completed three months
ahead of schedule and required an
investment of AU$955 million.
A second stage of the project was
announced in August 2011. It will
involve expansion of the plant's
capacity from 50GL/year to
100GL/year.
The project involves construction of
a 28km-long underground pipeline
from Binningup to a storage facility
comprising four summit tanks
located northeast of Harvey. The
pipeline will facilitate the transfer of
potable water from the plant to the
integrated water supply scheme.
Scope of works performed
Design, manufacture, supply,
construction and testing of a
second precast, post-tensioned
concrete, circular, roofed water
storage tank at the Water
Corporation’s Harvey summit tank
site.
The plant is owned by Water
Corporation which is the main
provider of water, wastewater and
drainage services in Western
Australia.
The new plant has the potential to
deliver 30% of the state's water
supply from climate-independent
water sources.
It is expected to deliver total potable
water savings of up to 1,200GL a
year.
