Barclays Private Clients International has expanded its workforce from 570 to 745 employees from 2003 to 2005 as part of a planned expansion program. The expansion added front office staff to enhance client relationships and secure more business worldwide, while boosting back office operations like call centers. The director said Barclays is confident about the future and expanding its workforce to demonstrate long-term commitment to the Isle of Man.

ince its incorporation in the Isle of Man in 2003
Barclays Private Clients International has been
implementing a planned programme of
expansion as part of its commitment to deliver
world class service levels. At a time when many
financial institutions are adopting a markedly cautious
approach to expansion and reducing manpower levels
Barclays is forging ahead with a recruitment and
promotion programme that has seen its numbers swell
from 570 in August 2003 to 745 by August 2005.
International corporate director Jonathan Pine said:
‘Barclays Private Clients International is very much in
a “growth phase”. Our workforce is expanding in line
with the continued success of the business. An
expansion not so much in terms of back office support
- although we have boosted our call centre operation to
keep pace with increased volumes of business - but
front office personnel to grow our senior relationship
management capability to enhance the client
experience and secure more business world wide.
‘We’re witnessing many businesses nervous about the
future and laying off staff, but Barclays has confidence
in what lies ahead and in expanding our numbers we’re
not only demonstrating our confidence in the future but
also our long-term commitment to the Isle of Man.’

S
imon’s appointment to this senior
position reflects both the growth and
future aspirations in this sector of the
business. Formerly head of credit risk,
Simon brings a wealth of corporate experience to
the role and leads a team of client relationship
managers and account executives. He has been
with Barclays 19 years, has worked within the
bank’s African and Caribbean credit risk
operations and more recently in Barclays’ offshore
and wealth management business. After some
years based in Mauritius Simon relocated to the
Island three years ago and says he relishes the
new challenge of leading a team in the client-facing
part of the business. Away from the office Simon
likes to spend as much time as possible with his
two children, Cameron, five and Daniel, three, and
enjoys running and playing golf and football.
Robert’s appointment will enhance
Barclays’ business development
capability and by extension, the
client experience. With Barclays for
eight years and previously a
business development manager in
Cyprus, Robert has a wealth of
internationally founded experience,
principally in Eastern Europe, Russia
and the Middle East and as one of
the ‘faces’ of the businesses his role
involves traveling to meet with his
international corporate clients.

As the business continues to
expand, so does its exposure
to risk. The appointment of Iain
to the position of corporate risk
manager is to manage that risk
by ensuring the business is fully
compliant with current
procedures and that all lending
is sanctioned and sampled in line
with credit risk policy. Iain, who
has been with Barclays six years
and previously headed the
electronic banking operations, is
now also responsible for raising
awareness of governance issues
that may affect the business.

lending roles since 1982 at branch
and regional office levels and has

relocated to Guernsey to head the
local corporate team. Now based in
the Island his role is to support Isle
of Man corporate managers when
structuring complex credit
proposals, especially property-
related transactions, and to help
develop new business. Out of the
office his hobbies are, in his words,
‘golf, golf and more golf.’
