Middle School Writing Skills and Room for Improvement
1. Middle School Strengths And Weaknesses
Throughout my entire middle school writing career, my writing techniques and skills have improved tremendously. Way back at the beginning of the
sixth grade, I thought writing a simple threeâparagraph research essay was a lot. However, as my writing career continued, now at the end of the
eighth grade, I can easily write a three page essay, and even more. My strengths as a writer include using a variety of transition words, being able to
form simple and complex sentences, and finding strong pieces of evidence.
My greatest weakness, where I definitely need to improve, is with elaborating and connecting my evidence back to my claim.
There are a bunch of instances where my essays demonstrate my strengths and weaknesses. For instance, in my complex

4. Argumentative Essay On School Start Time
Every morning students in the United States feel the effects the early start time many schools have implemented. These students are lethargic and
inattentive, due to the lack of sleep they are getting every night. Typically, adults see these characteristics as the result of teenagers staying up late
watching Netflix or using their cell phones. Many reputable organizations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of
Pediatrics, have researched this problem and found that teenagers are lacking in sleep due to biological and physiological changes that are occurring
within their brains. These shifts cause students to be more inattentive and reckless, resulting in lower grades, tardiness, and higher rates of car...show

By requiring teenagers to wake up early, school officials are basically neglecting the health of their student bodies in favor of making their lives
simpler. Despite the overwhelming evidence given by current research, many people refuse to change school start times because of the lack of
noticeable impact some schools had or the impact it had on some people's schedules. Pannoni cites a statement by the Iowa City Community School
District which found that "the later start time . . . [did] not reduce the number of tardy students by any appreciable amount." The principal of Ballard
High School agreed by saying that he "would be surprised to see large improvements in either attendance or grade data compared with past years"
(Pannoni). Many schools refused to change because of how the later start and dismissal times would affect extracurricular activities and students with
jobs. This change would also interfere with bus schedules and childcare habits. However, these seem like small problems that can be overcome when
the results are that "later school start times were associated with students sleeping longer at night, less tardiness, having higher test scores, being less
depressed, using less caffeine and other drugs, . . . and experiencing fewer morning car crashes" (Fenwick). The most compelling evidence that shows
changing school start

6. Argumentative Essay On Academic Competition
Competition. This word varies in connotation. To some, it symbolizes joy, triumph, and selfâsatisfaction, while for others the word represents
worthlessness and failure. Since an early age, kids are taught about competition through games and sports. Kids develop skills like sportsmanship,
integrity and fair play. Competition is like water in a sieve. To argue that competition does not exist is like saying that water is not leaking from a
sieve when only one hole is clogged. Competition is everywhere. In today's society, there has been a lot of controversy over academic competition in
school. Many see academic competition has a looming rain cloud that hangs over the students who excel differently, and cannot find success in the
standard school system. They see competition as emphasis on arbitrary performance. Yet, competition is not all that bad. Competition is what helps us
learn and grow as people. If students did not know the difference between a win or lose, then how would they know where to improve? Academic
competition gets a negative connotation, but in reality, it has an overall positive impact.
In a recent article, it was discussed how students are experiencing an overwhelming amount of stress from competition. Students, tired and sleep
deprived, dread school not because of the workload, but because of the academic competition. "While I understand that competition is an important
motivator to many students, I believe that our mental wellness would be significantly

Middle school was a rough time like it was for many because I still did not even know who I was yet. MIddle school was very difficult to adjust to at
first because all my life I had only been in one class all day everyday with the same teacher and they made sure you always had a note to remind you of
your homework for the night. Middle school was when I began to make my own choices and had to suffer the consequences that came with those
choices. In middle school is when I found out how much I liked business because of a field trip my 6th grade year to Biztown which was a small

8. Essay on Why Students Should Go to School
Why should students go to school?
There are several reasons why kids need to go to school but to me, the top three reasons are getting an education helps you go farther in life, it's
required by the state that you go till you reach a certain age, and it will help you learn social skills and help you be comfortable to talking to people.
Although students may not like going to school, it benefits them in the long run. It is important for students to go to school to get an education. Even
though some students may not like to go to school it is required that they go. Even though students may not realize it but they also learn social skills
by making friends and talking in front of people. It's significant for students to go to school so...show more content...
If you ever went into a business where you had to do a presentation on a piece of work you've been working on or if you came up with a new idea
that you thought could help your business, you would most likely have to present the information in front of your boss and coworkers. Having
social skills could play a big role in your presentation because if you was not comfortable talking in front of a crowd, then you could either: freeze
up while talking, talk too fast cause you're so nervous and want to get the presentation over with, your face could turn red, etc. But, if you had
social skills and were use to talking in front of a group of people then you will be comfortable presenting your project with no worries. Also by
socializing students can make friends. By making friends school could also be more enjoyable. You will have friends to eat lunch with; friends to
hang out with on the weekends and you will have friends in your classes so they will be less boring. If you went to a school where you didn't have
any friends or where you didn't like anyone, then you will not enjoy the activities you may do in class and you may want to change schools to find
kids that you do like and will enjoy being around. By having social skills it will help you talk to people and make friends.
Students may not like going to school but, it is for the best. By going to school students can get an education and get a job or go to college and

One of the areas of my writing where I was struggling in using my voice. Granite, there were parts of my essay where I successfully integrated
quotes within my voice, but for the most part that was my weakest area. For example of one of my better integrated quotes, in my third paragraph
when I say, "Today, consumers rely on social media for everything, whether it is communicating with old friends, finding new friends, shopping,
researching, and staying informed with the latest news. Daniel adds that, "'Americans who take part in political activities on social networking
sites also tend to be highly active in other areas of political or civic life'" (29), which insinuates that people rely on social media more today than we
have in the past". This was one of my better examples because I further explain and analyze the quote in my voice instead of just ending the
sentence after the quote. One of my poor examples is, "Many people who suffer from depression care a lot about what others think about them.
That is why many of those people tend to turn to social media as an outlet to express their feelings". I made a bold statement and did not back up
what I said with my voice I just ended that sentence and moved on. Instead of moving on I should have explained it further and told them why people
tend to turn to social media to express their feelings. One of the areas of my writing where I was

Anne Tyler once said, "If I waited till I felt like writing, I'd never write at all." If this were true I would have failed out of my academic writing class.
I have pushed aside my past of procrastination and took in the new material. As a result of the class commas, run on sentences, and many other bad
writing habits are now becoming a thing of the past. Mr. Roth has illustrated to me and supplied me with material to learn how to write better. The
time I spend in or out of this class, I am trying to understand writing better. I have learned how to write better sentences, avoid small boring words,
and correctly quote sources, but I still need work on unnecessary punctuation, better topic. To improve something, usually takes time and since the
first day of class on August 19th my sentence writing has became exceptionally better. In my argumentative essay I used limited sentences structures
and had multiple fragments. In the essay I used two types of sentences I knew about, the others came by a way of accident. I only knew how to write
simple sentences and compound sentence. I could have made more complex sentences if didn't cut of sentences with a period. I later improved this in

I learned is that, if you quote someone you put what they say and then their name at the end like (Mueller). The quotation marks end before the
author's name. I improved this in my proposing a solution essay. "choosing a locally owned store generates almost four times as much economic
benefit for the surrounding region as shopping at a chain" (Houston). I learned how to successful cite something in text and now am an improved

Failure is the step towards success. Do you agree?
It is often assumed that failure is a deterrent to achievement. Rather, failure should be seen as a motivator for a person to keep trying until the
objective or aim of a particular mission is fulfilled. Failure often times leads a person to feel helpless, disappointed and depressed. However, one should
not allow this to set them back in trying to achieve the ultimate aim one has set out to do. Failure in the beginning can often be a powerful incentive to
reassess one's position in wanting to achieve the particular aims; to analyse whether the purpose is worth the trouble the person has to undergo and the
whether the obstacles are surmountable. Practical and...show more content...
Another disadvantage of being an only is that he lacks companionship. He has no brother or sister to confide in. Growing up as an only child can
be very lonely. If you have siblings you will have to share everything, so you get less; but you also get less of the bad things. Siblings can support
and comfort each in times of trouble. The elder siblings learn to care for the younger ones and the younger ones learn to respect their elder siblings
and have someone to look up to besides their parents. You are more balanced person than an only child. Another advantage of having siblings is that
your parents' attention is divided among your siblings. As a result, there is less pressure on you to perform well, be it academically or in other areas.
Having siblings also means that you have companionship, the joy of caring and sharing, and security. I, personally, am happy that I am not an only child.
Students should not take up part time jobs. Discuss.
Nowadays, students love to have partâtime jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to gain experience from working. However, having a
job is a big responsibility for a student. Before, teenagers at their age were working to help their family because of poverty. Nevertheless, they were
actually eager to study and learn at school for their future. It was not the same as the teenagers nowadays where they are more likely competing to
each other to have a job. Most of the

14. Argumentative Essay On Bullying
Bullying
Bullying happens everywhere, whether it is at work, school, or home, This is Where It Ends, evidence in the schools, and adult psychiatric health
problems later on in life, are some supporting evidence to show that this is an ongoing problem. According to stopbullying.gov bullying is described
as "An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their powerâsuch as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularityâto control or
harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people." Bullying helps someone have
dominance over another, it can boost their confidence, and selfâesteem. Although bullying has been around for as long as anyone can remember, it is
just recently in the 2000s that is has received serious attention and research (Hymel). There have been many recent events that have focused on this
subject.
"13 Reasons Why", this is a very popular title that most teens, adults, and parents may know. This year, Netflix came out with the original series to
show what bullying can do. In the year of 2011 a 15 yearâold girl named Amanda Todd, posted her story on Youtube (Dean). Amanda was seriously
bullied for something that she had done in her middle school past, and was now in high school. One day after school, Amanda was found lying in
a ditch by her father, right before she had been beaten up by a group of girl from her school. After, Amanda went home and drank bleach, it did not
kill her, a few months later, she tried to overdose on pill, that also did not kill her. After, she posted her story on YouTube, people were saying "you
should try killing yourself again", or "you deserve to die", "try drinking a different bleach next time". A month later she attempted suicide. Not only
was Amanda the victim of physical and social bullying, but she was also the victim of cyberbullying (Dean). Cyberbullying is social network
bullying, it can happen over Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat etc. This is now becoming more, and more popular as the world enters into a more
technology based times. Although cyberbullying is now very popular, physical and social bullying are still used today. There are many stories on the

At that time, I was taking my phone out of my pocket to check messages. He asked if I was playing games, I replied "No". He then asked what I

16. Argumentative Essay On Bullying In Schools
Imagine living in a world where education was a place where everyone got along and there were no issues for students to come across interrupting
their education and prevent them from learning. Nowadays, few students are afraid to speak and say what's on their mind because they are scared to
be who they are when they know there will be someone out there to harm them whether if it's mental or physical harm either way they can affect
students in the same way. Bullying can also inherent issues in learning institutions, but high school teenagers are bullied all over the internet and in
person as well. Even though teenagers use technology every day because of its availability and affordability, with no adult supervision since it's their
phone. Therefore, zero tolerance toward violence vs. bullying in schools damages student's education and can interpret their learning. Education is a
process that involves the transfer of knowledge, habit and skills from one generation to another through teaching. Cyber bullying has been a problem
for a very long time due to the development of our technology today. It has become one of the most difficult issues to resolve in our society because
bullying comes in all sorts of ways.. As Eckes & Russo state, "Student substance abuse in and around schools in the form of drugs and alcohol, along
with weaponsârelated violence" (2012). This indicates that cyber bullying comes in many different shapes, whether it's on the internet or at school.

many key and driving factors today in our world. We find ourselves lost for many minutes or possibly hours at a time on any particular app or

smart man once said, "Time is money." If that quote is true do we find ourselves in the twenty first century wasting money on pictures of people we

ProCon.org reports that 59% of students with this access use social networking sites to discuss educational topics and 50% use the sites to talk about
school assignments. After the student leaves school grounds he or she is still required to complete various assignments or projects. With these comes
many questions or concerns on how the teacher may want a specific item completed, or even maybe how to even start an assignment. Social
networking and the ability to interact with fellow teachers and students after school hours is crucial to the success of every student. There truly is not
enough time in each school day to cover or complete all work that is necessary. With Facebook and our friends just a click away we enter in a world
of more focused student centered learning. Those selfâdriven students will seek our answers and solutions to any work assigned for outside of the

I never knew writing had such an abundant amount of alternatives for words that you could tweak, and build your writing even superior. Over the

different." It's more about making sure your word choice, vocabulary, and especially your grammar for the reason that those produce the most impact in

If you can make your conclusion correctly you can really wrap your writing together well, and it gives the writing another kick. To write a good
conclusion, DON'T! and I repeat DON'T! use the generic "In conclusion, blah blah blah..". Instead use something more unique. I personally like to
forget about using obvious throwaway words. Instead, finish with a definite statement, one which the rest of your essay proves conclusively to be
true. One example of how I did this is, "At the end of the story General Zaroff believes that Rainsford has simply given up and jumped off the cliffs
and into the sea to meet his death..." This is how I started my conclusion to "The Most Dangerous Game", a story about a man who is lost at sea,
and sees his only chance at survival.. an Island in the dark. Little did he know there was a man waiting for him to play a little game.. Also, don't
forget to restate your thesis statement in your conclusion. Restating your thesis statement is a MUST when you are writing your conclusion. The
completeness of my writing portfolio was I'd say mostly done. The only parts I'm missing are from before I moved here. Which include the "Copy of
