Eddy current displacement sensors can measure the transverse movement of pistons and position of piston rings in internal combustion engines under operating conditions. The miniature sensor has a measuring range of 0-0.5mm and response of less than 1 micrometer, with a very thin interconnecting cable. It is temperature stable up to 150-180°C and can operate in oil, petrol, air mixtures, and combustion gases and vibrations of an engine bench test. The sensor transmits data via a coaxial cable to an oscillator plug-in and demodulator plug-in for signal processing and digital display.
