3. PRIVATE BANKS:
The banks where greater parts of stake or equity are held by the private
shareholders and not by government.
Have grown faster & bigger over the two decades since liberalisation using
the latest technology, providing contemporary innovations and monetary
tools and techniques.
Old private-sector banks
The banks, which were not nationalized at the time of bank nationalization
that took place during 1969 and 1980 are known to be the old private-
sector banks. Ex-City Union Bank, ING Vysya Bank, Federal Bank etc.
New private-sector banks
The banks, which came in operation after 1991.
4. PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS :
Public Sector Banks (PSBs) are banks where a majority
stake (i.e. morethan 50%) is held by a government.
The shares of these banks are listed on stock exchanges.
There are a total of 27 PSBs in India [19 Nationalised
banks + 6 State bank
group (SBI + 5 associates) + 1 IDBI bank (Other Public
Sector-Indian Bank) = 26 PSBs + 1 recent Bhartiya
Mahila Bank].
