2. DIODE
Definition:
2
Diode, an electrical component that allows the flow of current
in only one direction.
A diode is a semiconductor device that essentially acts as a
one-way switch for current.
In circuit diagrams, a diode is represented by a triangle with a
line across one vertex.
3. Working of Diode
3
A diode is a semiconductor device that essentially acts as a one-way switch for
current. It allows current to flow easily in one direction, but severely restricts
current from flowing in the opposite direction.
4. Modes in Diode
• There are two operation modes of diodes based on
the applied voltage. They are:
1. Forward bias
2. Reverse bias
• Forward biasing occurs when the voltage across a diode
permits the natural flow of current,
• Reverse biasing denotes a voltage across the diode in the
opposite direction.
4
5. Forward Bias
• Forward bias or biasing is where the external
voltage is delivered across the P-N junction
diode.
• In a forward bias setup, the P-side of the
diode is attached to the positive terminal and
N-side is fixed to the negative side of the
battery.
5
7. Reverse Bias
• Reverse bias is when the p-side of the diode is
connected to the negative voltage of the
battery and the n-side is connected to the
positive voltage of the battery.
• This causes an increase in the thickness of the
depletion layer. This allows very less current to
flow through the PN junction.

10. Zener Diode
. A Zener diode is a heavily doped
semiconductor device that is designed to
operate in the reverse direction.
10
11. Working of Zener Diode
. It acts as a normal diode in forwarding bias.
. When the Zener diode is reverse biased the
junction potential increases.
. As the breakdown voltage is high this will
provide high voltage handling capacity. As the
reverse voltage is increased, the reverse current
increases drastically at a certain reverse voltage.
