Hope Children’s Home safely houses hundreds of children at its residential homes in New Mexico and Florida. In 2011, Hope Children’s Home established a location in El Progreso, Honduras, which cares for 32 children. The Central American country of Honduras struggles with endemic poverty and food insecurity. In 2020, Honduras experienced an increase in the number of people facing food insecurity and hunger. Before stay-at-home orders were issued because of the public health crisis, nearly 50 percent of Hondurans were impoverished. The closure of the economy has made earning an income and buying food even more difficult. People in rural areas of Honduras are more vulnerable to experiencing hunger due to failed crops from extended droughts, which occur frequently. When crops fail, these people are unable to access or afford imported food. As a result of endemic food insecurity, nearly a quarter of Honduran children are chronically malnourished. This leads to life-long problems, such as stunted growth, susceptibility to disease, and high obesity rates. For more information, visit www.hopechildrenshome.org.
