In the United States, child poverty has been a severe issue even when the country was established.
When looking at the statistics of child poverty from the past, it is clear that there was an increasing
number of families and children living in poverty. This trend dates back to the year 2000 when 11.6
million people were living in poverty. In 2007, the number of individuals suffering from poverty
rose to 13.4 million, (Arrighi & Maume, 2007). This is due to the massive economic fallout, also
known as the Great Recession. The United States lost over 7.5 million jobs and the unemployment
rate doubled, which directly impacted parents and their children, (Grusky & etc., 2011). This crisis
resulted in leaving many Americans financially insecure. Even though many of the financially stable
individuals suffered a great loss, they were able to utilize their resources to navigate through the
calamity and recover whereas those who were poor faced an economic issue with greater impact.
They were faced with foreclosures, bankruptcies and mortgage felonies. Most importantly, the lives
of the young children were negatively impacted as well. The four areas that the children were
affected by from the Great Recession were: health, hunger, housing, abuse and neglect, (Wiltz 2015).
In several households, there was at least one member that suffered from malnourishment because of

Children are faced with many consequences due to growing up in poverty. Most children who live
in poverty go to poor unsuitable schools, live in unexceptable housing, and grow up around more

For Our Future When people hear the words "child poverty" some assume that this term may refer
to homeless children who are living on the streets. This isn't necessarily true, in fact some children
who go to bed every night with a roof above their head still suffer from some form poverty.
According to National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP), 21% of children throughout the
United States live in families who are considered poor. It is crucial for society to be more aware of
this issue and to take part in contributing to help reduce child poverty within our country. In today's
society, the stigma around child poverty is related to homelessness. Poverty is the lack of support,
goods, and money. As a matter of fact, many kids who partake in the 21% statistic from NCCP do
live with parents who go to work and have a paying job. With that being said, the jobs that some
of their parents have are unstable and their income is very low making it difficult for these

More than 16 millions of America's children suffer in poverty. That is one in five children that live
in families in income that is below the federal poverty line. In today's time, United States is

Description
This semester, I was placed in a team to solve child poverty in New Zealand as a "wicked problem",
which are "impossible to solve simply or in their entirety". Our solution focused on creating a
lasting difference to not only the children who are affected but to their families as well by installing
a buddy program which also provided low–income single mothers with skill–based workshops. We
agreed to name our solution "Empower", and everybody in the group was from different
backgrounds and possessed different skill sets. We tried to show evidence ofcreative problem solving

These rules included having weekly checks in which members checked each other's work and
deciding when the meetings are held, as well as being respectful and courteous to other members. I
believe that these rules resulted in trust (which I believe motivated us to build a stronger
relationship with each other). The rules also made the group feel a sense of clarity, as it laid out
expectations for everyone, and allowed us to focus on working together effectively.
While working on the Challenge, there were two instances when a conflict was present. The first
occurred during the writing of the Milestone Report, in which a member did not gain other
members' approval to make major revisions a few hours before the deadline. Not only did the team
members suffer unnecessary stress, some were quite angry at this member's violation of the rules we
wrote out together. The second case involved a member who thought the group had unfairly given
them too much work. Both these cases were resolved quite easily through effective communication,
and improvements were seen quickly. I think that conflict may occur naturally in many, if not all,
group environments as a result of people having different backgrounds and values. I am very proud

In my research on child poverty, I read a scholarly journal entitled UNICEF 'Child Poverty in
Perspective' Report: A view from the UK. In the journal they compared the conditions of the
children living across the world in the industrialized countries. UK was found as the poorest of
them all. This comparison was on average against 21 countries. These reports were started in 2000,
where they resembled a report card of the comparisons but the latest one was February 2007. The
report has some interesting and detailed information on contributing factors on children poverty.

which is not healthy for them. Many children often worry about what others think about them,

Child poverty is an issue that has the public divided. On one side there are people empathising
with their plight and raising awareness on the issue, and on the other hand there are people
saying why the money always should go to the poor as it is costing New Zealand millions of
dollars each year. It has been portrayed by media as something to be combated and eradicated.
Conversations on poverty bring up the topics such as how it effects on a child 's well–being,
education and how to tackle it. This paper seeks to discuss the following questions; definitions of
poverty; how poverty measured; the challenges or tension regarding poverty. The objective of my
presentation is to critically examine poverty and how education is hindered, how it affects the four
tenets of Hauora and what policies the government has put in place to address this issue.
Bradshaw (2015) uses term child poverty to refer to the children who lack material resources to
attain a good life. There are two forms of poverty. One is 'absolute poverty, where there is a
definite shortage of available resources for everyone in that society. The other is 'relative poverty'
and is a form material disadvantage or deprivation. Relative poverty is when people fall below the
minimum amount of income needed to sustain an average standard of living in their society. Too

Child poverty is a major and complex issue that New Zealand faces today. The degree is far more
severe than the public's perception and it is a problem that we cannot afford to ignore. A
combination of factors contributes to child poverty, from individual causes at the micro level to the
macro collective government involvement. This occurs partly due to social construction and it is
potentially avoidable. The consequences can impact on both individual and to a great extent affect

Socio–economic factors are widely acknowledged as important determinants of poverty. If an
individual experiences adverse living conditions in childhood, majority of them will have inadequate
income and result in low socio–economic status as adults (Carroll et al, 2011). Children born in poor
households have difficulty in accessing the basic needs (e.g. food, clothing, and good living
environment) and this can affect their learning ability at school, unable to focus. In other words, they
have a higher chance of dropping out of school or lower education attainment, unable to provide
appropriate qualifications when they move onto adulthood, seeking for job opportunities. These
children are finding day–to–day life tough, they are living in cold, damp houses, do not have warm
or rain–proof clothing, their shoes are worn, and many days they go hungry (Children's

development, behaviour and physical health furthermore limiting their potential as they grow into
adults.
